I’m using a Forster Ultra Micrometer seating die to load my 28 Nosler and had issues seating bullets. After a few rounds, I felt something was wrong as the force to lower the ram was abnormal, bullets were scratched and could see steel particles... I dismantled the die and basically found the stem had contacted the die chamber internal walls; it had scrapped the walls. Since I didn’t have any alternative, I wrapped sand paper on a drill bit and sanded/polish the die chamber. I also polished the stem and removed the sharp edge that basically "dug” in the die chamber internal walls.
Prior to this process, I’m using a Redding Full length sizing die and I chamfer the case mouth. Obviously, I’m using Nosler brass as they are the one who makes the 28 Nosler brass at this time.
I spoke to Forster tech (Scott) and the only thing he mentioned could be too much neck tension... After discussing, he will send me a new stem but one that has not been hardened. He also confirmed that a bullet should move freely through the chamber die which was not my case after the issue... I also checked my other Ultra Micrometer seater in 308 WIN and the bullet does not go through easily in the chamber die either. I also have a friend who had the same issue I had but with a Redding Competition Micrometer seater.
I was wondering if anyone out there had similar issues and know the root cause, fixes, explanations, etc.
Cheers, Fred.
