Picked up a Ron Smith barrel stamped 280 Ack RKS 97 on the bottom yet stamped twice above that 284 Win.

Is that possible?

If it was originally chambered in 280 Rem Ack Imp how do you rechamber to 284 Win? A 280 casing would be longer no?

I do have a set of 280 Go/ No Go gauges here, I guess if I slid one in the bolt shouldn't close, correct?

I'd say off hand , you could rechamber 284 Win to 280 Rem or AI, you can always go up or to a larger case/shoulder. Isn't 280 AI or ACK larger than 284 Win? I shoot 284 Win, it's a smaller case - shorter than 280 Rem

280 is longer, but isn't the 284 fatter? If someone shortened it from the chamber end wouldn't they be able to then rechamber it to 284 without issue?

Yes. 284win is shorter, but while it shares the same rim diameter (.473") it is rebated so has a fatter body. The 280RE or AI has .470" base. You can rechamber to 284win from 280 but you will in effect be shortening the barrel about 1/2". You cannot rechamber a 284win to 280RE without losing ~2.2" of barrel... so never unless it's a straight barrel.

I figured that was the case.

Anyone off hand know what contour the barrel is if the chamber end is 1.2" and muzzle is .650"?

sounds like a lightweight varmint at heaviest, but most likely sporter profile. Refer to the diagrams and measurements provided on the web pages of barrel manufacturers. Benchmark, Pac-nor, Krieger, Shilen etc. all have these diagrams with measurements of all their barrel contours.

That's what I thought. Thanks for confirming.
