280 Ackley

Cleaned it last night after 202 rounds down the pipe since new. A few wet patches of Sharpshootr Carb-Out alternating with dry patches, then a wet patch of Wipeout Accelerator followed by a wet patch of Patchout. Let it sit for 30 mins then pushed a half dozen dry patches down. First shot from clean bore this morning landed +2" high @ 200 yards (1moa high) and the next four were bang on for elevation and into a 0.7moa group with the Berger 168gr Classic Hunters. I was pleased with how quickly it settled down and began shooting great

Next target was at 302 yards and laid three in there nicely. 1.4" / .44moa) ~ 58.0grs RL26 / 168gr Berger

Last week I swapped the Swarovski Z3 4-12x50 (great scope) for a Leupold Vx5 2-10x42. Was looking for a little lower bottom end magnification for hunting in the timber, and a turret that allowed me to shoot past 600 yards. So far very happy

Began playing with a couple other loads too, Berger 195gr EOL & RL26, and Sierra 197gr Matchkings over H4831sc. Both show some good promise. Last trip out had the 195gr @ 2640 fps, grouped decent at 640 yards. 197gr MK @ 2550 fps, sub moa at 200 yards. Fun to see the results, and utilizing the 1:8 twist rate

195gr Berger interests me. Reviews online show the holding together pretty decent at 400 yards on elk from a 28 Nosler (3000 fps or so MV). That's about what the 280 produces at the muzzle. Massive G1 BC of .743

Here's how it would stack up against a 300 Win Mag factory load (180gr Accubond @ 2960 fps)

280 Ackley 195gr EOL @ 2640 fps
200y 2422 fps / 2540 ft lbs energy. 0 inches bullet drop (zero) - wind drift in 10mph crosswind = 1.8"
400y 2214 fps / 2123 ft lbs energy. 22" drop, 7" wind drift
600y 2018 fps / 1763 ft lbs energy, 73" drop, 17" wind drift
800y 1831 fps / 1451 ft lbs energy, 157" drop, 32" wind drift

300 Win Mag 180gr Accubond @ 2960 fps
200y - 2600 fps / 2700 ft lbs energy, 0 incles bullet drop (zero) - wind drift in 10mph crosswind = 2.4"
400y - 2265 fps / 2050 ft lbs energy. 19" drop, 10" wind drift
600y - 1957 fps / 1530 ft lbs energy. 65" drop, 25" wind drift
800y - 1676 fps / 1122 ft lbs energy, 148" drop, 47" wind drift

30% less wind drift is huge. Equals the 300wm in energy at 400y, pulls away from there. Pretty impressive for a cartridge that makes 25% less recoil than the 300 Mag

No flies on 7mm bullets. Big fan myself (162 eldx and 180 berger) but to be fair you need to run that 195 against a 215 hybrid at a conservative 2750fps.

Do you have any on game experience with the Berger and AccuBond?

I've never killed with a Berger, have hunted very little with them. I've killed with Accubond, and have seen the results from a lot Accubond kills from friends and family. They work well, less likely to nuke than a Berger at high impact speeds

280 Ackley 195gr EOL @ 2640 fps
200y 2422 fps / 2540 ft lbs energy. 0 inches bullet drop (zero) - wind drift in 10mph crosswind = 1.8"

800y 1831 fps / 1451 ft lbs energy, 157" drop, 32" wind drift

300 Win Mag 215gr Berger Hybrid @ 2750 fps
200y - 2516 fps / 3020 ft lbs energy, 0 inches bullet drop (zero) - wind drift in 10mph crosswind = 1.8"
400y - 2292 fps / 2508 ft lbs energy. 20" drop, 7" wind drift
600y - 2082 fps / 2068 ft lbs energy. 67" drop, 17" wind drift
800y - 1882 fps / 1690 ft lbs energy, 146" drop, 32" wind drift

Recoil in 8lb rifles :

280 AI - 24 ft lbs (31% less)
300wm - 35 ft lbs (46% more)

Thanks for the update on the 168 CH. The 130 AccuBond was deadly on Texas Whitetail this past winter, but so was the 130 Berger Hunting. Took both my 6.5X47's down there. Heres the numbers from my 300 Win Mag with 215 Berger at 2995 fps:
Altitude-1528 ft
Baro Pressure-30.09
Temp- 32F
Humidity- 40%
Wind at 10 mph 90 degrees
100 yd ZERO

200 yds- -2.5"- 2720.3 fps/ 3532.5 ft-lbs wind drift 1.8"
400 yds- -22"- 2463.3 fps/ 2896.6 ft-lbs wind drift 7.3"
600 yds- -64.5" - 2220.9 fps/ 2354.7 ft-lbs wind drift 17.2"
800 yds- -135.5" - 1992.5/ 1895.2 ft-lbs wind drift 32.2"

Not sure how are numbers match up so close when my 300 Win Mag is going 245 fps faster than your example?? Drops are similar but I am zeroed at 100 yds. Wind drift is almost identical which is interesting to me. Maybe the faster velocity doesn't help as much with wind drift as I thought it would. Recoil with my gun is a non issue with the holland brake. I always use electronic noise canceling ear plugs. Even my 6.5's are braked. Gun finished at 10 lb 2 oz with a NF. The 215 is wicked!! Bit much for deer size game but was glad for it on my elk this last year at 625 yds.

I ran specs @ 2400', 50F, 50% humid. I used Litz's applied ballistics G7 BC of .361

2995 fps that's pretty skookum. Recoil is an issue for me, I won't hunt with a brake

It's built into my Sig Kilo 2400. It's unreal

For computer use I use Gunwerk's GSeven calculator and plug in the AB info from app

Yeah 2995 fps is cookin. But right in line with other guys. Especially BROZ over on Long Range Hunting Forum. Had him help me with the reamer specs. My friend also built a 300 Win Mag and used my reamer. His speeds are the same as mine. Both guns are built with #3 BRUX barrels.

Update : 160gr Trophy Bonded Tip shoot surprisingly well, been running them at 2940 fps with RL26

here's a group from 328y yesterday morning

After you've had some time to test some loads, are you happy with the 22.5'' length you chose to go with?

Oh yeah, about 500 rounds fired so far with bullets in the 150 to 197gr range. It's as fast as most 24" 7mm Rem Mag loads when you use RL26 in the 280Ack, and with more traditional powders like H4831sc, it makes plenty of speed. The 197gr Sierra MK over 53.9grs H4831sc does 2550 fps, and I used it at a long range fun shoot and did a 8.4" 3 shot group at 1038y. With a G7 BC of .404 (.789 G1), it retains velocity really well (1640 fps @ 1000y)

A friend has identical barrel on his 280Ack (22.5" 8 twist Benchmark) and he's shooting the 139gr Barnes LRX @ 3125 fps with RL26. Shoots really good too, one group at 300y was just under an inch

I have an 8 twist benchmark on order that will get a 7MM Rem Mag reamer. What can I do with the 140’s - 150’s with RL 26 and a 24” barrel?

This thread has me thinking I have to play with my 280AI more.
Been shooting 160 Accubonds over H4831 but have never chronyed this load. Early on I chronyed 140's at 3125.
Mine is a 23" x 9 twist Shilen I installed 9 years ago. Probably has less than 100 rounds through it.

Good info and good shooting 'bartell.

Retest with the 160gr Accubonds confirmed it's a good load! Fired four consecutive groups that averaged 0.51MOA @ 100 yards

60.1grs RL26 does 2956 fps from the 22.5" barrel

34462380_2066873073533085_4015348960636960768_n.jpg

I am left handed also, that rifle is a beautiful build something I would like to own, great caliber. The 160gr loads are very close to what my 7mm RM produced impressive.
