280 Ackley

Nice looking unit TB. I went looking on their site, but couldn't find the stocks listed. Mind if I ask what the stock was worth ballpark wise?

time to shoot!

I like the Tungsten metal work much better than the bronze... I like the Clymr stock too... how is the field comfort of the Clymr compared to the McMillan? Nice rifle, I like the tweaks you made.

I gasped when I saw the Leupold removed for the vortex lol,
Dreaming about a new 280ai, Weatherby backcountry, was told they could shorten it to 23”, concerned about it being too light.
Even considering a savage lightweight action build. I’ve learned to actually appreciate my savage once I got it shooting.

I gasped when I saw the Leupold removed for the vortex lol,

It will have a Vx5 3-15x44 on it as soon as I can get another one. Had to part with my last one in a horse trade. The Vortex is actually a pretty damn good scope, I've had this one for years on a number of rifles and it's always performed great. This is the Viper HS LR 4-16x50 w/ FFP XLR reticle

ah well I just got it, haven't carried it anywhere yet. What is comfort at the shoulder?

Some stocks ride bags well but have uncomfortable edges and corners when free-held... many crossover stocks lean more toward bench designs than field designs... personally, I like a slim, rounded stock for carrying and shooting freehand in the field. The Clymr seems to be more angular than the McMillan Edge... just curious what your assessment is in comparing the two.

It is angular, but still fairly slim. I'll post some pics up later. The Clymr was designed for prone position performance first and foremost, but I don't find it a problem with the little offhand dry firing I have done so far

I've stretched it out a couple trips this weekend. 0.8moa 4 shot on paper on Saturday night @ 608y, and smashed a rock a few times at 620y yesterday afternoon. Shooting the 162gr Hornady ELDm over 54.0grs IMR 4955 for 2750 fps MV

Has anyone here used the 175 partition in their 280ai? Looks like it would be a good elk masher. I’ve always used 160 accubonds in mine and think they’d probably be hard to improve on.

I have a box of them, the old semi spitzer profile Partition. I haven't shot any yet, but they'd be deadly. I also have a box of 175gr Swift A-Frames, which wouldn't bounce off an elk!

They’re pretty long and I only have a 3.3 inch mag box in my kimber. How fast do you think a guy could get them cooking with a 23” barrel?

I have some Reloader 26 on order, with no delivery in sight. I managed to scrounge up a pound of IMR 7977--do you have any experience with that powder and a 160 AB in the 280AI? I am going to load up some test rounds maybe this weekend, supposed to be a wet walleye opener so I might stay home and get some time on the reloading bench.

No I haven't used 7977 in the 280AI. Closest I have been is H1000 w/ 162gr ELDm (58.7grs 2750 fps / 60.0grs 2826 fps from 22.5" barrel)

Sounds like a shooter Todd.
Shooting rocks at longer distances always a fun event out in the field!
Longest I have tried has been 500 yards so far. Usually practice on rocks in banks in the 300-450 yard range from a variety of shooting positions (my personal hunting comfort zone depending on rifle and cartridge being carried afield that day) .

While my mentor always had good performance with the 175 gr bullets in his 7mm RM, I have pretty much stuck to the 160/162/165 gr bullets in my 280, 7mm RM and 7MM STW rifles. Have worked very well over the past 30+ years on all types of big game.
The 165 gr SGK performed very well in the 7mm RM...too bad it was only offered in the Federal Premium ammunition and not as a component! Have not had the the chance to try their new 165 gr Game Changer. The 160 gr AccuBond being my overall favourite bullet for the .284 caliber

Hard to beat the 160gr Accubond! It's been a good shooter in this rifle and the performance on game will always be reliable at any typical distance or shot angle. I've shot the 165gr Sierra Tipped Gameking and it's also very accurate. It should be a softer version of what the Accubond does, maybe better suited to game the size of cow elk or caribou and smaller

I just got a couple hundred of the 190gr A-Tip, should be fun poking these way out there. Hopefully have time to do so this summer
