With hopes that my rifle will be back from the gunsmith by hunting season I am looking for some reloading recipies for the 280 Ackley Improved shooting 160 gr nosler accubonds. I'm trying to get all my ducks in a row so when it does arrive I can get to the range and get a load developed, anyone have any tried tested and true loads?

As far as powders I have:
IMR 4831
IMR 4350
IMR 4064
H4831
H1000
Reloader 25

Thanks in advance

Yep, been shooting one for quite a while. Don't have load data handy but remember RL-19 for light bullets and RL-22 for heavier ones. Didn't have much luck with H-4831 in my gun. Will look up data and pm you.

Mine shoots 150 gr Sierra's great with IMR 4350. I'm going to try some
120s and 140s in the near future. I shot a cow elk with 160 Nosler Partitions
and IMR 4350, did not like the results and will never shoot Partitions again.

Sorry you are not pleased with the 160 Partition. With it I have taken at least 10 Elk, and never a reason to be displeased with it. May I ask what happened to cause you bad feelings? Regards, Eagleye.

Try Barns 140gr
over reloader22.When I had 280AI
I used this load and could get groups under 1/2 inch.
and around 3300fps.Thats out of a 26"heavy bbl though.

regards

Thanks for the help, I've heard that imr7828 is a good powder for the 280ai but I never used it, seems to be getting more popular, I'll check around and see if any is avaliable locally.

How hot are those loads @ 60 grs

I don't have my nosler manual in front of me,but IIRC they are'nt max.I have'nt had any pressure signs in the brass. My rifle also has a 25" barrel.RB

Eagleye - The Partitions totally blew apart. Two shots in the boiler room at
very close range and as far as I could tell the lead went right thru but the
jackets went everywhere. That's the only two Nosler's I've ever put in an
animal.

That's not all that uncommon for partitions. What happens is the front may disintegrate, but the rear section punches through, like its designed to do. If you look at a cross section of a partition, you can see the rear is like a solid, in that it's completely covered with copper. So it won't mushroom, but punches through anything in it's path. Sounds like those bullets did exactly what they were supposed to do.

280 Ackley Improved

Hi Brambles

I have a 280 improved in a sako.
I fire form brass as nosler # 5.manual.
Then I load it for 154 gr hornady interlock.
My pet load is imr 4350 54 grs.
Win. st. primers
Win or Rem. Brass.
This load in my rifle shoot's great. (ask Lorne)

Hope that help's
Thanx Reb (start lower and work up )

As Bronco Mudder stated, those Partitions did what hey are designed to do. How far did the elk go? If those were placed in the lungs, I'm guessing not far. EE.

Thanks for the info Reb

For my 7 Mystic (my version of the 280AI), I use H4350 in Fed GM cases, lit by a Fed 210M, pushing 162gr moly Amax to 2900 to 2950fps in a 24" Shillen.

I have also had success with H4831SC but velocities were not as high.
