280 AI Re-Barrel

Some more detail might be in order.
What rifle are you going to get rebarreled?
What do you expect to gain?
What are you using now as far as hand loads go? and what are you getting out of it now?
Is re-chambering an option?
are you looking at a lighter rifle or do you want to extend your range with a longer barrel?
That said you can probably get it re-chambered for $200 whereas to re-barrel will be $600 for the barrel plus the related gunsmithing.
I bought a 280 in 1998 and had a host of suggestions from people who did not have a 280 AI!
My current reload is pushing a 140 grain Barnes TTSX at 3000 fps.
Sierra pushes their 140 grain bullets from a 22 inch barrel at 2800 and claim 3100 for two loads from a 26 inch in 280 AI.

I picked up a Remington Model 700 (Classic) in 30-06 at an estate sale.....it's in excellent condition.
I want to built an accurate/reliable and light long range hunting rifle (Like a high quality Mountain Rifle).
I have picked the 280 AI because it's from a 30-06 case and close in velocity to the 7mm Rem Mag.
Thought I would accurize the action, bed it properly, and put on a new barrel......the stock is mint condition hopefully it can stay.
I don't want to spend a pile of money, the $600.00 doesn't sound unreasonable.
Planning a Caribou hunt and down the road an Elk hunt.
Presently have a 338-06 A square that I use for Moose Hunting and a 6.5mm x 55mm for Deer Hunting.
Would appreciate any advise.
Also a competent gunsmith to do the work.

I'd rebarrel before buying a Kimber Montana. A #3 contour Benchmark barrel on that Remington will make for a nice shooting rifle that is still very portable. I'd reccomend a 23 - 24" barrel in a 1:8.5 twist rate to stabilize most any bullet on the market.
If you want to blueprint the action, and re-barrel it your going to be well over your $600 mark. Im a fan of Benchmark Barrels, shot and owned a few and their unreal. They run a guy about $585 +/- you can find ones on the EE for few bucks cheaper, then you have to chamber the rifle thats average $250-$300, then if you want that action trued/blueprinted thats another $150 again +/- so you'll be close to $1200-$1500 said and done (assuming your rifle is blued, and want the barrel to match). But like they say, buy once cry once. Good luck!
