Hey everyone

Still doing some research on what load to use once my rifle gets here, bought a bunch of different bullets but I think I'm going to start with the 120gr and 140gr barnes TSX

My Barnes manual #3 does'nt have data for the TSX in it and considering the cannalures reduce the friction of the bullet I don't feel confident in using the standard "X" bullet data.

Does anyone have data for these powders
The Powders I have:

Reloader 25 & 22
IMR 4064, 4350, 4831
H4831, H1000, Retumbo

The TSX has GROOVES, not cannelures :)

And Barnes reccomends that you can up the powder charge a bit from regular X bullet loadings when using TSX bullets, as the pressure is reduced via the grooves.

So you can use your Barnes manual and start form near the top 280 loads...

However, my guess is that 280 AI will chime in here, and give you some load data that he has worked up in his 280AI..As always, start a little lowere, since chambers and barrels are all different.

Keep in mind that the 280AI is very, very close, but not a 7RM...Use that chrono an stick it out 10-15 feet away!!~!:)

Barnes has TSX data on their site for the regular 280 Rem

with RL19 & 120 TSX, they suggest 59.5 grains MAX @ 3175 fps. RL19 is pretty similar to IMR 4831

with XMR3100 (which is very similar to RL22 or H4831sc) they suggest 56.5 grains MAX @ 2950 fps.

You could start with these max loads in the regular 280, once you have some fireformed brass for your AI, and work up from there. IIRC you went with a 23" barrel so you'll probably be looking for around 3125-3150 f/s with 140s with most of the powders listed at safe maximum pressures.

Thanks guys

Say I reach 3150 fps and there are still no pressure signs, can I go farther or is the Pressure already going to be approaching max levels at these velocitys regardless?

Since your average guy can't measure the Pressure he's basically just going by pressure signs to give him the heads up that he's going too hot.

Well, given that the AI has - what, maybe 10% more capacity than the regular 280 - I'd be looking for about 10% more *energy* (ft.lbs) at the muzzle, or maybe in the range of 5-8% more velocity. You never get 'something for nothing,' so be very wary of improved and wildcat load data out there that doesn't track with the capacity gains over established loads. As you mentioned, handloaders and wildcatters don't have means to check pressure reliably. Traditional 'pressure signs' don't start manifesting until you are well *over* standard pressure levels. And they'll vary from gun to gun, depending on tolerances

With my 280AI and TSX's, I use enough H4350 to reach 3350 with the 120's, and enough H4831 SC to reach 3150 with the 140's. Actually, my rifle prefers the 150TSX, it gets enough H4831SC to reach 3050 fps. With the 140 and 150, I can get another 50 fps or so with RL22, but the accuracy isn't as good and the velocity extreme spreads are a lot bigger. H4831 for me.
