280 ai

It’s a bit of an obscure cartridge, expensive hard to find ammo and not a lot of guns chambered in it. There are a lot of cartridges that are super common that will do everything they need.

I shot the 280 Improved RCBS version since about 1970... it didn't do anything better than a .270 Winchester did. Shot the 6.5 - 280 Improved as well. It didn't do anything better than a .270 Winchester did. Today I would probably choose a .270 Winchester for a long action... a 7mm 08 for a shorter action.

The 280 AI is faster , fatter , flatter and has more energy ... I would rather shoot a 243 than the 270

Why isn’t 280 ai more popular ?
Everyone prefers a brand. It's not a brand. It's a wildcat. One of the few that have factory offerings. It's a great cartridge but factory rifle options don't keep up with the new tech. And factory ammo doesn't relate to custom rifle builds. It's got a strong following and it deserves too, but there are factory options that are now leaving it in the rear view. Cheers

I guess It’s just harder to sell new guns chambered in an outstanding old wildcat than one of hornaday’s new wonder cartridges I guess.

I mean we could have just spun fast twist 260 remington barrels on actions and not even made the 6.5 creedmoor. They market these new cartridges as this big breakthrough in tech to sell guns. Really the gains are marginal at best and sometimes nothing when you change a barrel twist.
