I have used commercial ammo in my .280 rem and had decent results with 140gr rem cor lok ammo. I have since started reloading but am still experimenting with different bullets and powder. Very nice caliber to load for.
I use a Rem 280 Mtn rifle as my primary hunting rig. I have been using Federal 140gr barnes TSX rounds. Not terribly cheap but I only use a box a year. Drops deer every year for me.
I found my rifle likes the 140gr, my dad uses the Hornady 139gr with his older Rem 280 Mtn rifle and he has tons of deer and a bull elk to back it up.
I found the shorter Mtn rifles with 22" barrels like the 140gr factory ammo but a full size Rem 280 with the 24" barrel liked the cheap 150gr Federal ammo more.
Its never to late to start reloading. If you do start there are many CGN members who would have lots of valuable info to help you with most of your questions. A good reloading manual would be a good place to start. If you want to stick with factory ammo there is lots of good ammo out there. The kind of ammo you use will depend on what type of hunting or target shooting you do.
My 280 is my primary hunting rifle and it has never seen a factory round.
I have used the Speer 160 grain MagTip but currently use the 140 grain Barnes TTSX at just over 3000 fps
The suggestions are valid but it depends on what you intend to hunt.
Look at 140 grain bullets for deer and black bear.
160's for moose and elk.
