280 rem brass from 30-06

Hi guys, I've got a bunch of '06 brass and need some 280. Is it easy to do or does the shoulder become a problem and needs fireforming? thanks

The start of the shoulder is about .050 longer on a .280 rem, so is the OAL.

I wouldn't bother trying to use 3006 brass,you may get it fireformed but the life of the brass will be short lived.

Go get some winchester brand brass and go from there IMO.

Why not. I have used lots of .30-06 brass to make .270, and brass life is no different than it would be as a .30-06.
The shoulder is an issue in forming the case. I would suggest that you full length size as a .30-06 first. Then, use your .280 die to neck size. Adjust the die carefully, checking in your rifle until the bolt closes with some effort. In that way, you will have the correct headspace for the new shoulder.

I'll be damned, works just fine. Sized a '06 case in the 280 die, just enough so that could close the bolt. Loaded a 154g sp ontop of 45g of H4350 and bang!! One custom case that looks like it will never need trimming....cool

Sure it works, but by the time you fireform that way, with the cost of your bullets and powder, you could buy new brass...

Well ya I could buy new brass, but wait! I'm in the middle of nowhere and can't get any...I have some 06 brass so what the hell. Anyway, after chatting with some more people I seems that a full house load can be used and even hunted with, while fireforming!! Ya, seems crazy to me too, but too much fun not to try. So today, 50g of H4350 (max), 154g bullet and resized '06 cases. Plus, heavy gloves and a helmet with protective shield, ( ya don't laugh, I had it so I used it). At 100ys, seated field position I fjired 3 rounds......1.25" group. I'm sold

Ya, Ive done that with '06 to 270 and 243 and 308 to 260,...all good!

I am glad it worked out well. There is no reason that the fireforming loads cannot be used for initial sighting of the rifle, and PRACTICE. They are not wasted rounds, as you have already found out.
