280 Rem. Or 284 Win

280 is the painless way to go.

Rem338Win has a beautiful 284 Win, but short action M70's are hard to find and the list of guys who can build a 284 on one that runs right are short. And the guy who built this one? Chances are good he's not interested in doing it again... ;)

For the extra 3 oz or so and 1/2 inch you put up with in a long action over a short, I'd now go long action every time. Speaking of those two cartridges specifically.

That was kind of my point about action length, I had a 25-284 built on a Remington 700 and the mag length limited it to 2.84 inches.

x2 to what Rick said. I love the 284 (being yet another owner of that one pictured) but it takes the right builder to build one that feeds right. Everything has to be perfect (and that one is).

I like the 280 or go the route I went and go 7-08AI. Now THAT is an easy rig to deal with and still lands a guy close with velocities that are quite acceptable.

The 280 sure is an easy working rig though, so I'd have to give it the nod. The 284 gets the COOL factor every day of the week though...

x2 particularly on the cool factor.

I'm pretty happy with my 284. It is my go to hunting rifle at this time.

:agree: Pretty impressive grouping from an equally classic firearm in a classic caliber. I'd hang on to that....I know a guy that might just jump on that beauty. :)

Unless I could find a short action Model 70 I would stay away from the .284.To many modifications to handle today's all copper(and longer) bullets.I'm partial to the .280,I have one as well as a .280AI.My latest 7mm is a 7mmRSAUM.I bought it for a rebuild but it's been so accurate and so easy to load for that it's found a place in my cabinet. With 140gr bullets it's pretty well a short action .280AI! Brownells sells longer mag boxes and followers (back when I did it you had to cut and weld), and it's an easy mod. Poof, 3.2" col. - dan
Dan,if that's the Wyatt box, they're not just "poof".I looked in to them and had two well respected smiths tell me to forget it!The receiver needs to be milled, bolt stop moved, and a couple of other little things.I'll stick to the Model 70S/A to give me the extra length! Mur

I don't recall the name of the box, as I said, I made my own. In any case, I didn't find the mods difficult, but I can see where some folks might. Perhaps I should have said that IF you have the mechanical ability to modify the mag box and receiver it is an easy mod. That better?:D - dan
