The "270 Winchester for elk" thread got me thinking about my 280.

I was at the range on Friday and did some fine tuning with my 300 Winchester Magnum and the 280.

I have a moose hunt coming up next month and though I normally hunt moose with my 300 I'll bring the 280 too in case I drop the 300 in a lake or something.

The 280 is sighted in and shooting well with Federal Premium ammo with 140 grain Trophy Bonded tip bullets. It's got a 3x9 scope on it too compared to a fixed 4-power on my 300. I like carrying and shooting it a bit more than my 300 too.

Will that knock a moose down?

Not a great deal of difference to a 7 mag.

While i ate a lot of moose growing up, shot with wimpy factory 308 150gr, Moose now use kevlar.

Seriously though, would work fine. Perhaps a larger premium projectile. Given the choice i would still use the 300, but if you needed to use the 280 it would.be fine.

"Will it knock a moose down?" Possibly not but the same might well be true for a 375 H&H.

The question reminds me of the old story regarding northern guides who encourage first time moose hunters to shoot again....and again...and again, regardless of the fact that the first shot was perfect and the moose is likely dead on its feet.
Reasoning being that all "usable" meat has to be packed out by the guide and 4 or 5 more random bullet holes reduces the "usable" portion by several hundred pounds.

Could be just a tall tale but I can follow the logic..

I'd stack up on 160 grainers or heavier and go hunting! I'm taking my .280 Ackley out this fall for moose and have no doubts it'll do the job.

For reasons too complicated to explain, I have spent close to the value of the rifle in purchasing various brands and bullets of ammo for this rifle and now that I have settled on what I've got; I'm not changing.

My 280 Ackley will be in my hands for the majority of moose season, 160gr Nosler Accubonds @ 2950. Lots of moose have died via 7mm Rem Mag. I wouldn't hesitate to hunt moose with a standard 280 with 140gr TBT, it's a great bullet

My 280 rem shoots the 160 accubond at 2875fps. Chronograph some 7mm RM factory ammo in colder temps sometime. You will be surprised at the real speed.

The first moose - and Elk for that matter- that I shot close to 50 years ago dropped to a single 170 grain bullet from a 30-30. I don't think there're any tougher today.
