280 Remington for moose?

FWIW I had a 280 for a while but I only shot deer with it so I can't comment on it for moose. I have however carried two moose out of the bush each killed with one round from a 7mm-08 using a 140 grain bullet

After assisting with dressing and extraction of a few moose killed with conventional soft points from a few different cartridges, I feel pretty confident that a well placed, bonded 140 grain, 7mm projectile started at somewhere between 2700 and 3200fps will probably result in very dead moose.
I am surprised no asked what your .300 mag is shooting for a load.

I shoot plain Jane 180 grain Winchester Silver box ammo in my 300.

A .280 Remmy or the 7mm-06 or the 7mm Express - whatever you want to call that cartridge is great on Moose. An Inuit friend of mine used to use his .22LR on Moose. Shoot, sit, smoke, get up and walk over. Just don't chase. I use a .280 Remington Model 721 built in 1962 for moose, deer, antelope, bear, paper, etc. It's a great flat shooting round. Go hard and don't worry about it, just don't miss!

The "270 Winchester for elk" thread got me thinking about my 280. I was at the range on Friday and did some fine tuning with my 300 Winchester Magnum and the 280. I have a moose hunt coming up next month and though I normally hunt moose with my 300 I'll bring the 280 too in case I drop the 300 in a lake or something. The 280 is sighted in and shooting well with Federal Premium ammo with 140 grain Trophy Bonded tip bullets. It's got a 3x9 scope on it too compared to a fixed 4-power on my 300. I like carrying and shooting it a bit more than my 300 too. Will that knock a moose down?

Yep, it will work just fine.

.280 rem is an excellent moose cartridge. Ive lost track of how many moose Ive shot with my .280. Mostly 1 shot kills. Longest shot was 390 meters

My native grandfather hunted moose with the 22LR as well. Followed the same routine. Moose never travelled more than 100 yards, laid down, and were done by the time he got there. He said the secret was "tickling them in the ribs".
I've used the 280 w/ 160 gr bullets on moose. As well as the 6.5x55, 6.5 Creedmoor, 30-30, 7MM Rem Mag, 30-06, 308, 338 Win Mag, 7MM STW, 358 Win and 375 Win. All with one in the boiler room equals moosemeat in the freezer.
Have fun on your hunt, and use your 280 with confidence!
