.280 Ross M1910

Not exacrtly. Buffalo uses .300H&H BASIC to make their brass. This is basically a straight-walled case without the .300 H&H belt and longer. They then turn the rim down slightly and form the case. It comes out an exact duplicate of the original round.

I have 100 cases and they are perfect - far better than just re-sized H&H.
 
where do you get 300 H&H basic its the first i herd of it the ones i have are 300 H&H magnum which are the same thing as 300 H&H or so im told
 
Honestly, I'm not sure guys. But the owner of Buffalo Arms married a Canadian girl and when we got to talking hockey (she converted him?) last time I phoned them, he mentioned they use .300H&H basic to make .280 Ross and it is not belted (and never was).

I've never seen the "basic" brass that was not made into something else, but I'm assuming it's not fully drawn and swaged to the final .300 H&H shape.

So, ... does your Buffalo Ross brass have a belt, or any remains of one?.

According to Donnelly's(1987)cartridge spec's, 280 Ross has a base dia. of .535, rim .556, rim thickness .06, case length 2.6.
The next size up case that could be altered to achieve all the Ross spec's, is .450#2.
Every dimention would require machining though ... a lot of work...$.
Seems more likely the cases are made up from Ultra Mag brass.
 
There are a LOT more red rifles and owners than Rosses.

I note that fireformed .300 H&H cases expand in front of the belt. I would assume that the .300 basic cases are pulled from production before the forming step that produces the belt.
 
FWIW, and in probable contravention of soem obscure CGN rule, there is another Canadian-operated forum with a Ross-specific sub-forum. As of today there are 1046 posts in it.
 
If we had more than conjecture and hearsay to provide I think there could be a sticky.

I did a LOT of reading on the internet in regards to the ross rifle, the story, the cartridge and so on. There is info out there. A few of us have rifles, have fired them, and have made our own ammunition. Sounds like a solid base of knowledge.

Maybe I should attempt to pull everything together to be vetted by some noted scholars here? A little consolidation on an obscure topic, with a forum ranked highly in google search, can bring a LOT more traffic than you might think.

Horneber brass is available in 280 Ross, as far as I know it's correctly headstamped, not remanufactured but it's around 50 US/20 rd and then there is a $250 export fee. Works out to $500/100 before shipping.
There is a Canadian dealer selling 280 Flanged by Bertram which requires turning the rims down also pretty pricey stuff.
Didn't realize that 300 H&H had become hard to find and got so pricey.
Reports of some guys using the 375 Ruger brass which turns out a case with no belt. This requires a couple of extra forming steps as the brass has a much larger neck than 300 H&H, no big deal if you have die sets in some in between calibers that will serve. I looked into this and locally it would be cheaper to buy loaded 375 Ruger ammo and pull the bullets than to order 375 Ruger brass!
It's nice to have the "correct" brass but for now I'm content with my H&H cases and to shoot my prize possession.
Ordering a set of CH custom dies looks like the way to go. Redding is advertising a 4-6 month wait. You would have dies matched to your rifle and no worries. I only got a sizer and use a 7mm Weatherby mag die for seating.
 
I contacted Hülsen - Horneber some years ago. They were willing to ship to Canada. But if I recall, they would only sell 1000 pieces of 280 Ross, and nothing less. I passed on the offer and ordered 100 pieces 280 Ross from the states.

Some enterprising person might contact this company and see if they still ship to Canada. Excess cases could always be sold on the EE.
 
So it turns out I'm a LIAR! I went and re-looked at my brass, it was NOT made from .300 H&H Basic, it was made from .348 basic!! Sorry guys.

The Horneber brass is available through a US company which can import to Canada, they charge $250 for the permit. Don't know if Horneber imports directly to Canada .
