I'm giving serious consideration to rebarreling my model 70 30-06 to a 7mm of some sort. Always been a 280/7mm fan and have owned more 280's specifically than anything else. Know what to expect there.

Now the AI. That possibility keeps popping up in the back of my mind. A great member of this board was even kind enough to send me some AI dummies to run through the action to check for potential feeding issues. No problems, even with empties.

Which route?

There was a good article in handloader magazine about it this month. If you are going to get a new barrel they should be able to do it in 280 AI from the start, I was thinking of getting one from pac-nor in that caliber.

My good friend and shooting partner here shoots a 280AI. Over the chrony, he gets almost exactly the same performance as published 7mmRemMag with less powder and no pressure signs.

No brainer on the 280AI. They feed perfectly in all the rifles I've tried 'em in.

Chuck, by any chance do you have an Aunt that sells Havalon Pirantas?

the 280 AI is WAY better than a 7mm Rem Mag...:)

it gives velocity way out of proportion to the powder charge...it holds only about 15 grs LESS, yes, LESS powder than the 7mm Rem Mag but some how manages to get the same speed......can't explain it......:)..pressure?...nah...wildcatters never load hot...:)

280 Ackley, Not that I am aware of. In fact I'll say no. Thats the thing about my last name. It's pretty common. Outside of a few miles, I don't seem to be related to any Nelson's.

Have you had a chance to try Nosler brass in any of your 280 AI's?

Barsness wrote a great article about the factory 280AI, the 7mm SAUM. Apparently case capacity and performance is virtually identical and no fireforming brass.

ahhhh, the 7saum...one of those "keepers" I should of kept :(

you cant go wrong with either the 280 or the AI version...they both have their advantages

I'd get a 280AI if I didn't have a 7RM that I liekd so much. A 7RM has a bigger case, holds more powder and WILL exceed the 280AI in velocity if the same pressures are used...:)

My 280AI loaded with 55gr of bluedot and a 140gr TSX is a combo that I'm betting your 7 Rem Mag can't touch (grin)!

She mentioned her nephew was a taxidermist (David Nelson) in southern Alberta and also mentioned a Chuck Nelson.

Her sons are guides (one owns a whitetail area in Southern AB)....must be a different family.

Sweet knives though!

Terri? Yep she's my aunt. Was not thinking knives. Dave is the guy I do most of my hunting with, and he uses that knife and likes it a bunch.

Didn't you buy a 280 Mtn Rifle from Dave?

Chuck
