7 mil, accurate, gun will most likely function well with this round, ballistics are real good, bullet selection also good. Buy it. sets between .270 and 30-06 , necked down from 06 or necked up from .270

thanks for the info now my reall big question is how available is ammo can i go to crappy tire or walmart and find ammo or do i have to gotto hanting and fishing stores?????

This bad rep. is unfair , and comes from folks that should not own guns, cause can't clean 'em and /or load a bloody mag (some mags are for 2 or 3 different cartridges). Get those cases to the back of the mag. (often see folks tap a mag to line 'em up at the back so the breechblock picks it up. ;)

A "jamomatic" 280 rem/140gr core-lokts was used this year to shoot these two guys, on the run I might add. Please excuse the language. (click on the picture)

There's a small chance it's a Browning; they also chambered the .280 for a couple years. Actually, I always wanted a Rem 7400 or Model Four autoloader in .280 to compare to my .280 A-Bolt. The .280 has moderate recoil and lots of killing power. Someone in a thread a few weeks back said that Crappy Tires in Kenora and Dryden area stock .280, and of course all major shops have it. Despite some people's predicting its demise, it's been a pretty successful cartridge. When Remington introduced the Mountain Rifle, .280 outsold all the other chamberings combined. Too bad they didn't keep it past year one in the CDL. If they hadn't backed the pressure off to ensure functioning of the model 740 back in 1957, the cartridge would have outperformed the .270, and had a better chance to thrive.

Are you saying that there are no inherent flaws in many Remington 742's? I got news for ya .. I have seen many of them go for scrap cuz the soft steel rails were beyond repair. Nothing to do with maintenance they were the original disposable rifle.;)

280 and 742

Hi bigredd, I bought my used 742 in 1970 to this day it has never failed to function. I also hunted with a group of moose hunters for three years and 8 of them use the 742 or 7400 and none of them disliked their rifles. I agree with Levi

Their have been folks that have had problems, and it all leads back to not cleaning the inside of the rx, or the odd failed extractor, or even some ammo makes did not work well (which if you added all factors will cause problems)
My friend had a problem once, fired .308 in a 30-06 remmy. :D cause of the failure un Determined:D

I have seen both sides of the 742 issues. Seen some super reliable ones & some single shot wonders with serious rail issues
My advise to anyone buying one is to fire it first!!

With luck it could be a Belguim BAR :)

Yes the browning rifle although heavy is a winner. Issues with semi auto rifles are real, look at 22 cal rifles, pistols, there always is a reason (cleaning ,loading, and ammo):D One might say if you want to toss it in a corner , and pick it up and shoot it , then repeat that, get a bolt gun.:) Old John Browning sure made some fine guns, the Americans did not Believe in him , but Belgium did.

Ohh..I don't know about that! old John designed a lot of guns Americans did buy...I sure don't need to name them!

But while I love the BAR's till they get the weight & stupid trap door clip issue fixed I have no desire to own another!
