280AI Long Range Build.

Great looking rifle. That speed sounds about right... never really found super long barrels to give me that 'extra' speed expected. Maybe your barrel will speed up??? for me, the fastest accurate speeds were always in the first 100rds+ then the barrel slowed down as internal pressures increased.

Enjoy...

Jerry

PS, keep an eye on the bolt lugs and uneven wear. That is a whole lot of barrel hanging off the front unsupported (assume you didn't bed the action). Actions can bend under load.
every barrel I've gotten from KS tends to speed up about 100-150fps

Hopefully my N565 Arrives this weekend and i can brave the cold for a range test to see what happens!

Does a 1,25"cyl x 35" barrel really benefit by free-floating in a chassis?
compared to a pressure point over a bipod? curious here
No way to know, I think, til ya shoot it. I'm betting it will be fine. Pressure points are tough to tune, and only used as a last resort, in my experience.

Managed To find a magazine that will work!
Accurate Mag .300WM LA SSSF 5 (3.850 ) CIP
MAG100-0023

Just need to bend the feed lips in apparently.

And thankfully Go Big Tactical has them!

Hit 2840 Fps with 59gr of N570. -5c. Brand new barrel. Previous barrels I've experienced a 100fps + Gain once shot in a bit. So we will see how that goes. N570 isnt the ideal choice byt it was what I had on hand, waiting for some N565 to be delivered.

As expected. Very little recoil. Took it out all the way to 800m

Great to see you have the potential of reaching the velocity you were hoping for. That's always a good feeling. It will be icing on the cake if you hit an accuracy node around there as well. My 284 Shehane shoots 180 Berger Hybrids exceptionably well at 2950 (30" barrel) but after looking at my targets over time, 2875 fps aggs better. I have not tried pushing past 2950 to see if I can find the next higher node. It would be too hard on components even if I could find it, which I doubt. As Jerry mentioned, faster is not always better. Still, the pursuit of it all is where I find the enjoyment. Cool project L.P.

Also, for what its worth, at 1300 meters my 284 Shehane shooting 180's is still about 1/2 moa +/- but beyond that it all falls apart. It'll hit a 3x3 gong but the short range bench rest shooter in me isn't happy to just hit the target, I want to stack shots on purpose and not by luck. I have not tried heavier bullets because my barrel twist is too slow to do so. I look forward to seeing how your 190's do at 1600 m.

That Speed is Very hard on your brass not gonna get a lot of primer pocket life 🤷‍♂️

What powder and grs of it are you using under your 180 s to get too 2950 fps ? 🤷‍♂️ just wondering 🤔😊

I'm not having any issues with primer pockets - yet. I'm on the 4th and 5th firing with my current lot of Lapua brass. 57.1 gr of H4831SC is yielding 2873 at 2250' elevation and 57.3 is yielding 2951 at 5200" elevation. I've pushed to 58 gr and started to see pressure signs. I just wanted to see how much the brass would take. Keep in mind, I'm talking 284 Shehane, not the standard 284.

The 57.1 load is my go to. It has an SD of 3.4 and ES of 9. The 180 Hybrids are seated .003" into the lands. Case necks are turned to .0125" and I run .002" neck tension. She's a great load! I know my brass will outlast the remaining life in my barrel. When the barrel is shot out I'll start with new brass anyway.

Good. You know what’s going on 👍 . I’m using 54.5 H4831SC 184 F open at 2820 with my 32 “ std 284 W
Brass is 12 plus reloaded Annealed every time also . I have a few brass now that the P pockets are getting too loose now about 1 in 10 show up . Still pretty Good life . they will last the barrel out 😊

Cant say the cold was doing me any favors for group size! But we hit 2950 fps!

ES isnt great.
My thoery as to why
-Warn out mainspring (action wa second hand)
-needing a magnum primer
-bench mistakes with the thrower & drop tube combo. Some kernels got hung up.

Well see what the warmer weather brings!

I have shot the 180 Hybrids in my 280ai 9 twist with H4831 2950 no signs of pressure 32" tube
190 A tips with N565 & N165. Even the 197 sierras with N165 2850 and still some room left
N165 is the ticket for heavies in 280ai my go to Powder. super cool burning powder & consistent
