280rem work

I have a 280rem that i can't get to group as tight as i used to. I talked to some folks with a little more knowlage than me to see what they think.
this is what they say to do.

1st get a new stock and bed it (the front of the stock is touching the barrel
plus i'd like a laminate)
2nd ream the end of the barrel (there are a couple of nicks there)

any one know someone in alberta that can do this work for me?

Well, a barrel doesn't HAVE to be floated to be accurate. I'd be much more concerned about the nicks at the muzzle. That's called the crown, and is absolutely vital to accuracy that it's in good condition. Getting a barrel re-crowned should be fairly economical, and any gunsmith should be able to do the work. There are several in the Edmonton area, and the better ones are in the yellow pages.

want to see if your rifle shoots better free floated? take one of those nice plastic clips from your bread bag and insert it between the stock and the front action screw and tighten er down. This should eliminate the contact between the forend and the barrel. Groups tighten then you know that your gun just might perform better floated.

Do the opposite if you have a free floated barrel. Put a shim like a folded business card under the barrel near to the foreend to eliminate the gap and watch er go.

You didn't say what you've already tried, if anything. My .280 was also starting to make bigger groups. I gave it a thorough cleaning with Hoppe's Bench Rest copper solvent. That could be the problem. It worked for me.

i cleaned it good at end of last hunting season the just a few pull throughs with a bore snake when i started shooting this year. it does get knocked around a bit as i use it as my primary hunting gun. i'll give the bread clip a try and look more into the "crown" job. i've seen barrels that are counter sunk... i'm guessing this is to protect the buisness end?
