.284 cast in 270?

with only 7 thousands difference between .270 cast and 284 cast,, do you think i have enough room for bullet release , if i shoot .284 cast in my 270 win, cant buy .270 cast bullets without buying a mold , dont want that ,i am experiened loader ,,and think this would be fine , i am talking 1200 fps plinker loads max , looking for others opinion ,,wade
 
the specs IIRC allow for a 0.0155 thick brass at the neck

if you add 0.031 to 0.284 you get 0.315, so you would have to remove brass from the necks, perhaps up to 0.007 to match the diameter spec'd

what may be easier, is to lube them, then run then into 0.280/0.281 sizing die, and push then in finger snug in an fired/NON-resized case, load and shoot


I have to wonder if you could even get them to seat without expanding to 0.280 or more, unless they are hard.

also, another issue is most, if not all 7mm cast moulds drop fatter than 0.284, more like 0.286


I'd say, unless you want to dedicate some brass and have very thin necks, the drawing of the bullet would be your first road of travel.


Edit to add: just check SAAMI specs, and the neck is designed to allow 0.0008 for expansion.... not near enough without taking off a lot of brass.... 0.3150 - 0.3088 = 0.0062/2 = 0.0031 brass removal to get a TIGHT fit... you'd have to remove a bit more to allow chambering.

I just tried a 7mm cast bullet in a few fired .270 Win cases . . . they will not begin to enter the case (the bullet was sized to .286"). I also tried a .284" jacketed bullet, same result. Even if your chamber has enough clearance in the neck, you might not have clearance in the throat/leade.
 
You'll typically need to size it down to 0.280" to give the minimum 2 thou neck clearance you'll need.
 
I've sized the Lee C285-130-1R down to .278 and shot them out of my 6.8SPC with success. I filled the lube grooves with bullet lube by hand first and then sized them down in one shot without problems in an opened up Lee size die that I also chamfered the mouth on. Once I found out ti worked, I machined off the gas check shank portion of the mold and now have a plain base plinker bullet that weighs around 105gr. I can resize without lubing it first and the lube groove disappears. I then powder coat it. Have not tested any of the shortened plain base boolits yet though.
 
Only 7 thousands difference still makes it the wrong diameter. Lead is unlikely to cause any damage, but you might get leading when the bullet is swaged by the barrel. Even if you could get a .284" bullet into a .277" case mouth.
What did you think a .243 sizer would do? How did you plan on "opening it up"? Dies are hardened steel.

Wade,that is how a person learns things in life,whether it be with regard to handloading ammunition or advice on which car to buy or ???.Keep right on asking questions when you aren't sure about something,the majority of people around here will help out.
 
thanks , i am a advanced handloader , and never have worked with the amount needed for bullet release, rather be safe , so asked the question , most were wanting to help , and much appriciated , thanks wade
