284 Win for PRS?

Lets try to get back on track - you could go with a 6.5 Swedemoor.

Scott Satterlee in the US ran one for awhile (I saw him at RLRR and he was shooting a 6 creed though). It is very similar to to a 6.5X55AI and he does get it to run out of a SA gun and magazine. It will push the 140 class of bullets over 3,000 FPS.

You could maybe cram a 284 into a SA but the bullet would be seriously impeding case capacity and you probably could not get the speed you would want/need. The rebated rim has also made mag feeding difficult but maybe that has been overcome.

I did shoot a couple of PRS matches with a 6.5X55. Once I got the mag feeding figured out it was a perfectly workable gun but the mags are huge (and I think getting harder to find) and that can get in the way on some obstacles.

Being where you are I can put you into some great guys that know a thing or two about PRS and they would be more than happy to talk to you about PRS.

Random plug here as well: There is a 22 PRS match in Med Hat in about a month if you want to try things out.

I think you should just stick with the 6.5CM, I am pushing my 140gr nosler RDF at 2840 and have no problem reaching out to 1400 yards. It can reach out to 1600m but you are getting pretty close to the subsonic speeds.
If I ever get a chance to push my 6.5CM that distance I'll let you know. Unless you are wanting to shoot ELR competitions than you should do a new build for that but in that game most people shoot the 7mm.

Probably because you project yourself like a child in this thread. I personally can't blame the guy for being a smart ass.

He gave a very valid reason in his original response to you. The increased recoil of the .284 far outweighs any ballistic benefit that it would provide. The majority of targets in PRS matches are between 300-600 yards. There's a reason why there's a big push to 6mm cartridges in PRS and NRL matches.

Thank you for the Reply It was Very informative ! That was EASY - Thxs RJ

There are a couple guys who do well in the US matches who shoot the 6.5 Addiction and run them in SAs although they'll run better out of something like a "medium" action like those new Defiance XMs. 140s around 3100fps is pretty normal. I've spoken with Scott about them in the past and he's kind of a proponent for different calibers for different conditions. He said that his 6 creed was for when he couldn't reload, haha. At the ELR match we were talking about 7 SAUMs as I want to do one for PRS ELR (for which they're pretty popular) and he was spit-balling the idea of running a 7 SAUM with a lighter bullet, like 168s (I think?) for really windy regular PRS matches.

Anyways, to the OP, it's always a trade-off of ballistics to recoil more or less but you generally can't go wrong shooting any short action 6 or 6.5mm caliber for PRS and they'll all go out a ways if you're so inclined. I've taken my 6 creed out to 1600 yards (110s going 3000fps) no problem and you should be able to get there with a 6.5 as well.

One of the things you will run into is everyone is going to have a different idea of what is capable at those distances. Right now I shoot a 308 Winchester and have for many years. However, next year when I start building my new competition rifle/long range gun I'm going to build a 6.5X47 Lapua. It ticks all my boxes, easy to reload, small rifle primers, excellent case life, and excellent brass quality. I'm not huge on adding a new powder, bullets, and dies to my reloading gear but it is what it is. I've been avoiding a lot of the 6MM stuff as it seems 6.5MM cartridges seem to be easier on barrels if the speeds are within normal levels. Otherwise, I would be building a 6MM SLR.

I helped a buddy shoot 175 SMK's out of a .308 at 1400m last week. With 20mph wind from 8:00. Flat line hits on steel and he could call his own shots. I'm not sure the round is the biggest consideration in the equation. .300 wm with 190's went to 1600 in the same conditions and I could call my shots. I get PRS and the desire to combine yoga and shooting but what does that mean to the rest of us. Other than competition I'm not sure why I would want to shoot off a tire hanging from a chain. Off a branch, a rock or even a pile of dirt is realistic. Shoot what you bring, shoot lots and get good at what you do. The results will be there regardless of the round you choose.
