Hey everyone....

I am, for some reason, very much wanting to build a hunting rifle in 284Win. I have done some reading on it and there can be some feeding issues.

I am looking for input, preferably from someone that has done it, on what parts to use.

I am wondering if any of the Wyatt mag boxes will help with the feeding issues. If I go ahead with this, it would be built on a Stiller Predator action so it is already setup for those extended boxes. I've read somewhere that their WSM boxes work well for this purpose.

I would go with a 26" barrel for sure, but mainly want to make sure I can get it to feed reliably.

Thanks.

I got mine off the EE. Anyone that imports HS stuff should be able to get you one but you may have to wait.

I just checked and mine holds 3 rounds of 284 and has a mag box length of 2.86" They require inletting, need to make the mag area of the stock wider and longer in the front as well as cut a bit of a notch out of the back near the trigger group.

The HS mags are nice because they are round on the bottom and only stick out a little bit. Good for a hunting rifle that gets carried around. There are other mags out there the precision shooters like to use but they stick out a lot and are sharp on the bottom they also have big sticky outy mag release levers, not my cup of tea.

I plan on eventualy getting at least one more short action HS mag. I have one for a 338 Lapua long action that I will use on a Utra Mag build one day as well. Got it off the EE too.

I have seen them in pics and it would be perfect for my needs as I really don't like the look of the drop down ones for hunting specially.

also 3 in the mag for hunting is great. That should solve my problems... now just gotta find one.

on a side note, am I correct that reamers are slightly different for setting up to use necked Lapua brass instead of straight Winchester brass?

I am, for some reason, very much wanting to build a hunting rifle in 284Win.

Reasons I think you should re-think your thoughts.
There is nothing a .284 can do better than a wsm can do. You can load the wsm down to velocity of a .284 or you can step it up to the 7mm rem mag and 300wsm and more find ammo anywhere.
Brass is very hard to find for .284 ( you could neck up 6.5/284 Lapua some work required)
There is little reloading data for .284 what there is not up to what a bolt action can handle, Winchester loaded very moderatly as there Win 88 & Model 100 where not strong like a boltgun.
I would think resale value of a .284 would be much lower than the wsm (no Loaded ammo available)
I built a & 7mmwsm Rem trued action short, Hart 24" barrel, McMillan stock it was a shooter was driving 140gr Noslers at 3290 fps and very accurate, but it kicked hard gun with scope weighed 7lbs,it had a Rem magazine and cycled rounds well.a member here bought it and loves it and has shot lots of game in BC.
But the 7mmwsm is dieing as well hardly no manufactures offering it any more.
the American & Canadians where brain washed by the late Jack Oconnor on his 270win.
I read where he said the .280 rem was a better cartridge.
Just my thought

Thank you for your input and thoughts....

although I do not see how this helps with my question of making sure a 284 win feeds correctly.

I'll second JJ-65. Alphas also were 90% based on the .284 and .284 wildcats. Mine are all on 600 Remingtons except for the Alphas. The fact is that feeding is just as much dependant on the gunsmith building it.

My recent model 7 SS build feeds great. And I owned a Model 70 SS in one. RickF says Leeper swore he wouldn't try that again.
All the model 700's I have heard of feed great, so a Stiller will too.
Wyatt center feeds will work great and give you some OAL grace. Skip the HS mag for that cartridge. Short on OAL room and the Wyatt will feed just as well for 1/10th the price of the bottom metal.
Funny though, I have a TAC30 with HS bottom metal and mag in 6.5x47L down stairs. And I like that.

Sorry dude, you obviously have zero experience with everything you wrote. I would, having experience with all of the above things, ignore this.

Other than being a bit higher on the "cool" scale, the 284 won't do anything for you here in NB that a 7/08 won't do, and the 7/08 would be a LOT easier to build/buy.

A few years back I thought long and hard about a 284 for here in NB and finally went with a 270Win instead. I'm glad it did, but the 7/08 may have been a better choice in a lighter rifle.

Did you order directly from Wyatt? I thinks I should get me an internal center feed mag box and give it a go on my 7-08 and 308. These Remington short actions don't feed reliably enough for me in factory form.

Yes, ordered directly from them. hopefully no issues getting it. The one I ordered (CFE5 if I remember exactly) is the extended one +0.11" or so to the factory mag length and I believe there are action modifications required to make it fit a factory rem action.

I have already purchased the Stiller action and have asked for the order for the stock, barrel and trigger all from North Shore, so I'm set on the components for the most part. Although that certainly would have been another option.

Not that it matters and I could be wrong but are the Corlane's actions Defiance Machine ones stamped with their company info?

Corlanes makes their own action.
Not sure of your budget nor if they offer this chambering.
Worthy of an inquiry?

I can't comment on the actions.
I was looking at their web site and I saw they made their own,
Rocky Mountain Rifles.

They dont make their own actions. I have seen them work on remingtons, defiance, and for awhile they were going to use bordens.... whether they have RMR engraved or not - they arent making them.

Corlanes offers defiance actions. The Stiller is at least the equivalent IMO so I wouldn't worry.
Personally Corlanes is overpriced for the work. For the same amount of money you could have Ralph Martini hit that package and I can guaranteed you that is a step up.

For the barrel job and all, lots of great guys that work for great prices.

The .284 and the .270 are 1gr apart in water capacity. Basically you have a SA .270/280 with what some would claim is "inherent" accuracy.

Brass is not an issue as some claim, I can get it when ever I want.

There is still factory ammo (Winchester 150gr PP)
