284 win

Anything you hunt with a lightweight mountain rifle "goats, sheep" doesn't require a bullet any heavier than 140 grains and with a magazine length of 3" or a shade better will allow for bullets up to 160 grains as long as the bullet isn't seated past the ogive. Will the bullet be seated deep, yes it will, will there be plenty of powder, Yup, probably enough for book maximum. I've shot 154 grain hornady's in a magazine of 2.800 length with plenty of room for powder. 54 grains of reloader 17 sent the 154gr at 2900 fps from a 20" barrel.... it was a tad hot. The 280 and 7x57 do not fit in a short action and the 284win has an edge over the 7-08. The most powder I stuffed in the 284 with 120 grain bullets was 61 grains of h4831, try that with the 7-08 :)

This is the reply im looking for! I have a 280rem, 280ai, 7x57 and 2 7mm08’s... One of my stand/stalking rifles is a 20” 6.5 sweed which is also awesome, but kinda wanted a 7mm instead of the 6.5. I think a T3 in 284 with 20” barrel would be awesome. I wouldnt be shooting anything bigger than 140’s anyway.... Thanks alot for starting a 284 thread Jim! :)

Quick question on this Cal and looking for "real world results" not what's onnthe web or printed

Does it have enough jam for larger game or is it ideally suited to Sheep/Goats/Antelope and Deer sized game?

The 284 Winchester is for the custom gun builder and hand loader. The 270 Winchester would be a better choice if you’re not one of those.

Well I couldn't help myself, I ordered some Peterson Brass, Hornady Dies, going to give the 284 Winchester some attention, reamer were using has .150 freeborn so should give us a bit more room in the case.
I have a few options for builds, Carl Gustaf 1900 action with a Wildcat stock and Barrel ? , Kimber Mountain Ascent and a Benchmark #1 contour,
may just rechamber my Husky 280AI which has a Wildcat Stock and Benchmark Barrel.
