alright I need a little schooling on this one.

284 Winchester, looks like a nice little compromise sitting between 7-08 and 7mmRM, case is a little like 7.5x55 but has the rebated rim.

might be a nice little project, and a use for a Ross rifle receiver :)

So comments??

Ok I did some thinking and measuring and while the 284 Winchester would make a good rifle I am thinking that I might try something a little more radical

The bolt face I'm working with on the Ross is .540" the 284 is only .470". So I'm thinking that if I use 7mmRM cases with the belt turned off and shorten them to about the length of a 303 case I should have something similar to the 280 ross in case capacity. Might even swage the cases down a little to make them more like the 284 Win with a base diameter of .500 rather then .512" The rim on the 7mmRM is a lot closer the 303 bolt face, end up with something like a 284 semi-rimmed.

I like the 284, I've had a couple of them (still have one i built on a Rem 600 for chasing goats). but for that Ross I think your rimless 7 rm idea has a lot of merit. will fit the action better, and give you a very useful cartridge to boot. - dan

might have to dust off the Ross M10 sporter in 280 Ross again too if I'm going to be messing around turning down the belts on 7RM, but then there is the issue of finding appropriate sized bullets, and borrowing some forming dies :)

The one I'm looking at for this project is a 1905R Ross commercial sporter with a burnt out barrel, well 2 burnt out barrels the second one was a cut down military that is in worse shape then the commercial barrel. The did come in 280Ross as well as 303 and 35WCF so I think its fairly safe to work with.

A .540" boltface sounds a lot like a WSM etc.

Or you could base it on the 375 Flanged Magnum brass (I see Norma available), with the rims turned down a bit.

.540 bolt face would be better suited to a 7mm-300WSM, just a step up above the .284 and messing with brass and rims and belts could be completely eliminated. 7mm WSM brass is impossible to find, and when you find it, stupid expensive, but necking down 300 WSM mag brass is a cheap alternative and gives up nothing to the other full case.

I still think you should just cut down 303 british brass and run it into a 35 remington full length die and make a rimmed 35 remington, cheap dies, lower pressures and just plain cool

a list of donor brass for you.............

well I do have a 325WSM, but I'm not going to reform any of that brass, it was hard enough to find.

I have time to contemplate where I want to go with this one, I will then have to source a barrel :)

I`d be sticking to .303-35WCF pressures for this one.

The 1905 actions that were in 280 Ross were not the same as what you are working with. They were actually 1907 actions, still marked 1905, but with a serrated bolt-head similar to the M-10.

If you decide the 7WSM will work for you it can be loaded down to 284W velocities.
No available brass, never been a problem I use 270WSM brass, once through die and you're ready to go.
expanding the neck from .277 to .284= .007, it does not cause any doughnut in neck as some may claim.
Anyway enjoy.
