28c gr charge in 223 rem

Ive got lee 2nd and lymann 49th. For the 223 rem max load for a 40gr jacketed and 28c gr varget lymann lists 3383fps. Lee lists 3674fps for the same load
Anyone have any other manuals to reference?
Seeing what powders i have on hand to start working up a load for this sweet lil winchester that doesnt like to shoot

Quickload says that with a 22" barrel, a COAL of 2.260" with a 40gr vmax, 28gr of varget (116% compressed load) gives you 3509 fps at 52738 psi.

I know it's not perfect, but there you go anyways.

BTW, only 86.7% of propellant burnt by end of barrel. For ####s and giggles... a 240" barrel burns 99% of the charge for 4916 fps... so says the software :)

Why did you chose a 40 gr bullet?

Im loading for accuracy not speed. It wont shoot anything over 55grs and 50gr bullets dont seem to group well. Im going to try 40gr bullets then lighter using every powder i have. The best i can get is 1.5" 3 shot group and even that is rare. Love the gun though

I found 50 grain Noslers 39522 I believe with Benchmark is very accurate out of my tikka 1-8 twisty
 
I feel your pain.

I had a similar problem with a 22 Hornet. Loved the rifle, but I could not get it to shoot.

I tried different powders and one day it shot dime sized groups. According to the log book it was a load similar to one I had shot before.

I pulled some of the bullets and weight the powder charges. 5 grains light! I had miss-set my balance beam.

After that, by loading lighter than the Start load, it was a tack driver.

I suggest you try 50 gr bullets and start below Start and load up to over MAx, is 0.5 gr increments.

I assume you have used a good copper cutter bore cleaner?
 
Yup. Barrel is mint. It has a 1in12 twist. Its a winchester xtr fwt. Absolute gem to carry. Nice wood fantastic bluing jeweled bolt. Ill try what powders i have on hand and add a few more and keep trying. The gun will be used for coyotes and ontario ground hogs. Shots will be inside 250 yards and most will be under 100yards. The best it shoots is abou 2 to 2 1/4" 5 shot groups waiting 2 mins between shots. The best 3 shot group was 1.5" for 3 shots. It is now a personal challange and if i fail ill rebarrel
 
The H335 loaf of 27.4 Gr behind a 40 vmax our of a 26” bbl as Hornady showed for their test Barrel chronos 3720 out of my 26” shilen Barrel /223. Im not sure how much barrel length would change the FPS, but I would think 28.5 Gr H335@3462 is a very conservative FPS for that charge.

Your results were similar to a Winchester bolt rifle I have in 22 Hornet. It has the old 1-16 twist rate with a .222 diameter bore. It likes 35 and 40 grain bullets loaded to around 2300fps very much. It also prefers cast bullets.

OP, I suspect your rifle has the 1-14 twist rate if it doesn't like bullets that weigh more than 55 grains. Usually increasing the velocity will settle the 55 grain bullets down to some very tight groups in the 223 rem.

I had one rifle from the Remington Custom Shop with a 1-14 twist heavy barrel that was 24 inches long by special order. It would only shoot 50-55 grain flat base bullets well. Boat tail bullets of any weight didn't work. Using soft point bullets opened the groups as well. It loved hand swaged 224 diameter 50 grain hollow points best of all. As for powders, BLC2 gave the best results.
 
Could find h335 locally.
The rifle shot its best groups its ever shot yesterday. Zero wind and i got 2x 3 shot groups. One was right at 1" triangle with 24 grs reloader 10. The other was 23 grs reloader 10. 2 bullets almost touching then 1 an inch below them
Blc2 and varget didnt produce anything under 1.75" i still have a couple powders on hand to try but im going to play with seating depth and neck sized brass with the loads that showed promise
I tried the patched rod down the bore method of measuring twist. It could very well be a 1 in 14. The rifle is a winchester xtr fwt. Very trim lil rifle with a short pencil thin barrel thus the reason for 3 shot groups. It wont shoot any boattail 50grs and over straight. Barnes varmint grenades are sideways at 20 feet from the muzzle
I may try 35 gr bullets as well i need to go back and buy more of these 40 gr noslers
If i can get consistent 1" groups ill keep it as is. I didnt chrono the loads yet
 
Have you tried flat based bullets? My Savage 222 will not shoot 50grain v-max worth crap. Load cases with same powder/charge and stick a 50 grain flat based spritzer or round nose bullet and it will shoot sub MOA all day(if I do my part).
 
I Second what Deadeyes40 mentioned. A flat based bullet of the same weight as another boattail bullet may perform, I think it comes down to the boattails sometimes having a greater length.
 
For what it's worth, and the above posters mentioning the flat based bullets, my CZ with a 1:12 twist loves the flat-based 40 gr Nosler Varmageddon and 50 gr Hornady SXSP. Sitting on a decent charge of H322, seems to be the most accurate combinations I've tried so far.
