Need (want) a light responsive 28 for woodcock. Narrowed it down to the Franchi Renaissance Classic or the FAIR Rizzini LX 692( both with 26" bls). Anyone have any comments on the quality of these two? They both fit me and I shoot them equally.

Ended up with the Jubilee Prestige. Tried it out tonight at low gun skeet -- shot 2 rounds scored 24 each -- she's a keeper! Shoots almost as good as a 16ga:D

"Small Munsterlander Pointers & a 16 gauge.What more can a man need"? Those Woodcock would probably fall no matter what gauge you used. Maybe even a 16. :)
 
Cannot say that I have experiance with either of the two 28 gauge shotguns you spoke of.I have two 28 gauge Franchi 48 AL shtguns and never had any trouble with them.Of the two you spoke of I would go with the Franchi.Franchi shotguns have a good track record.

I own both Franchi and FAIR shotguns, and although I am a died in the wool Franchi fanatic, I just ordered another FAIR in .410, a Jubilee.
I also own a 20 gauge ( Safari) and have shot the 692 and a FAIR Premier.
I own three Franchis at the moment , and have owned about 10 at one time or other.

Both are very nice, but I like my FAIR a bit more.
The big thing for me is that the FAIR distributor - Will Bilozir , is in Calgary and is very accomadating when it comes to ordering stuff.
That being said, there are some fantastic deals on Franchis at the moment with some dealerships!
Both P&D Enterprises and Ellwood Epps mail order and their Franchi shotguns are on sale.....

Well the desision has been made. I ordered the Fair Rizzini Jubilee Prestige with 26" bls. Should have it in 10 days ----EEEEEYYYYaaaaaaaa HHooooooo!

September 15th. I have a camp within what is perhaps the best Woodcock cover south west NB. Holds mucho #'s of the large northern migrants on the new moon in October. Just ordered a set of Briley skeet chokes today (lite & regular).

Sounds like your time is getting close,Grouser.Have not hunted woodcock as such myself but have bagged a few while partridge(ruffed grouse)hunting.I know a guy who dearly loves to go woodcock hunting.He calls the woodcock the greatest game bird.
 
I too recently bought a 28. I bought the Stevens 512 Goldwing, more of a bargain gun than fancy, but it seems to come to the shoulder well, and it seems to bust clay well too. It came with five factory choke tubes too which was suprising to me for the price. I hope you enjoy your new toy as much as I have mine! And good luck on the woodcock, I will be trying them for the first time this fall. :dancingbanana:

Best of luck with the new o/u! Hope you will post some close-up images of your bag. A single pellet hit is enough to bring the bird down but those sure do present a hard moving target particularly in the terrain it is hunted :)

I recently bought a 28 gauge Stevens to try it out , then sell it ( which I did)
I was VERY impressed with the way that gun shot for an entry level shotgun!
Double beads as well, which is not normal on many field guns , but which I find very helpful.
The biggest issue I have with that gun are the little "pheasent" appliques that they stuck on the side of the receiver- they look more like some prehistoric bird than a ditch parrot!!:confused:
Other than that, I would have no problem at all recommending that little shotgun to anyone who needed a dependable shotgun.

Yeah the "gold pheasants" on the side are a little distracting from its overall pleasing appearance. I thought about taking it to a smith to see if there is anything that could be done to remove them, but in the end I am really pleased with that purchase. I am headed to Luther marsh tomorrow for a field trial and I hope to give it a try on chukars and pheasants. I will give a report to let you know how I make out.
