I'm new here and this is my first post. I've read lots in this forum and have not seen anything covering this topic. What would you guys recommend for an inexpensive 2way radio for dense coastal forest. I would need atleast two handsets with the possibility of adding more later. The weather around here is fairly damp about eleven and a half months a year if that makes a difference. Thanks for any help.

Hi, we are a Motorola dealer and sell a variety of 2 way radios and accessories.

Some Motorola models hold up well in damp conditions, have lots of features and are not overly expensive. They are somewhat underpowered compared to our other UHF or VHF handsets.

Since you describe the environment as dense, a .5 watt to 2 watt FRS/GMRS may only give you a 1/2km - 1km of distortion free use. How far apart is your party?

We have lots of information on our website on the various models:

Accessories

Almost all our radios qualify for free shipping. Shoot me a PM if you need any further assistance.

Cheers,

Frank

I dont understand the trend towards GPRS. If you are going to be 1 or 2 km apart at the most GPRS would work fine. CB would work better and there is lots of good used stuff to be found. The much lower frequency of CB works much better in dense forest conditions and fog.

This is probably the part of the thread that a ham chimes in and suggests real licensed radios. I think it's only a weekend course now, then you can use real radios. I would go that route but the guys I go out with have no interest.

We are going to run marine radios this fall, which is legal as we will be in canoes this trip. I am going to be making some good antennas out of copper pipe that will be mounted to the boats. We need to extend the range of our battery operated handhelds. With 5 watts with the stock little rubber duckies we are getting 2 km under bad conditions and up to 8 under ideal conditions. This is on the marine/VHF band.
