3" BPS opinions.

Want to get some opinions on the regular 3" field model Browning BPS. I have never owned one and I am looking at it to cover my pump gun needs. Is it heavy? What does it swing like? etc.
I would like to add that I will be buying online and won't be able to handle one beforehand.

Probally one shotgun I would not buy on line until I shouldered it. I find the 12ga and 10ga doesn't fit me well and I am reaching out to pump the action. I have a 16ga BPS also with the upland stock and that one is fine.
Weight and swing seemed fine on the 12ga but total cleaning is a bear until you do it a few times and if you get one blued it is a constant battle to keep it from rusting at least mine are with the salty air as would be for you also.
Excellent guns overall if they fit you
 
I would agree that you should handle one before buying. They are very well made. One of, if not the smoothest pump in the market today. But as mentioned, the pump handle is a bit shorter than others and taking it apart take some getting use to.

Okay, Thanks for the points.
I am tall with long arms. I had a Benelli Nova that I liked as well as a Stoeger P-350 but found I short stroked the pump because of the 3.5 inch receiver. That is why I have a 3.5 inch semi. Maybe I will just look for a used Wingmaster magnum or older Express.
 
I never had any problems disassembling firearms for cleaning. Being an aircraft mechanic I spend most all day disassembling and assembling small intricate parts. That is one skill I am proficient at (wingshooting...not so much ;) )

Too bad there is not someone close to you just to try it. I have never tried the two you mentioned but know it doesn't shoulder like a 870.

Well brother have probally 40 plus year playing with guns and those red seal stamps myself not air craft but mechanical and I will never forget the first time I took the 10ga BPS totally apart.
Apart was easy, back together all of 3 hours, cuts and a lot of bad words;)
Now I can do it with my eyes closed after reading about the tricks. You will see or get real lucky as some do. Know why browning says leave the receiver alone or to take it to a shop . Let us know :)

Well that probably seals it for me. I live 3 hours from the nearest smith. I need a shotgun I can work on myself. I do a lot of sal####er hunting so I need to be able to clean it well. :(

No No. I didnot mean to scare you off my apologies . Once you do it once or are shown it is not an issue just be prepared for the 1st time it is no 870. Also now there is some real good write ups on the internet about it which were not there when I was doing the 10ga for the 1st time. Read those and take your time and you will be fine but not a gun I would take apart in the truck or boat like a 870.
 
I'll echo the long reach on the pump. I'd compare it to the P-350 even though that's a 3.5" gun.

I should add that I've shot a friend's a few times and think it's a good solid gun, it's just too big for me. He uses his almost daily from September until December every year.

Pass on the. Bps and buy some piece of crap mossberg or win xp what ever or the king of junk the famous express NOT! The Bps is hands down the best pump made today smooth high luster blue steel mached parts that a rarity in a gun today I have worked as a gunsmith since they have come out 1978 never seen this rusting thing people speaking blueing is actually a rusting process when u take a new gun out of a box u should be whiping rust off of it that means it is a good bluing job as opposed to a blacking process that some companies use my Ceasar Guerini still has rust coming off the bbl"s after 6 months they have the nicest blueing I have ever seen really unless u drop your BPS in the mud there is no reason to dissasable the action for cleaning untill u put about 10,000 rounds through it or u just like to tinker
 
2 things that killed me on the Benelli Nova and the Stoeger 350. The long pump stroke and also (this may sound stupid) I found if after the last shot I unshouldered the gun and ejected the shell at waist level the stupid extended piece of pump (that covers the lifter when the pump is open) would sometimes get caught up in my jacket. I know it sounds dumb but it did happen on more than one occasion.

The LOP is 14.5, if I'm not mistaken, so it's more for big folks 6 feet and taller or for people with longer arms :)
It is relatively heavy compared to others because the receiver is machined from one billet of steel but because of it, it swings very well.
Also bottom eject is second to none! Perfect in a blind so that your shells are not flying in your buddy's face.

As to being heavy, it helps tame the recoil and adds some smoothness to your swing. I personally don't care if it's heavy or not because you sit in a blind with it anyway :)
 
I like my browning bps's. I have one in 28 ga and one in 410. I like the extra weight on the smaller gauges. They swing nice for skeet. They are very well made and I like the tang safety and bottom eject. I still like my beloved winchester model 12's the best of all.For new pumps available today, the bps is the best choice IMHO.

I respect your opinion and gunsmithing skills but you cannot even remotely compare rust formation on any metal until you live surrounded by ocean like both myself and the Op does.
Believe me it is not a out of the box issue and I have an entire set of BPS from 410 to 10ga. They are real hard to keep that what I agree is real nice blueing on any BPS especially if ever used for a waterfowl gun in our location.
I also collect old muscle cars and what I see when I am out in sask still driving every day I have not seen here on the roads in 20 years due to rusting out.
In fact I don't even thing you use salt on the roads in the winter. My bud just came home from saskatoon before xmas after 4 years and the very 1st thing he said getting off the plane was how nice it was to suck that old salt air again. I have to wash my windows in July/ August at times after a storm to get the salt off.
This time it is an issue with location being used not the gun or it's factory bluing. Down here bps camo rules like my 3 1/2 in 12ga and is bullet proof

That sounds like a sound advise. Seems like they're built like a tank. I'm waiting for mine in mail right now.

The BPS is a great gun! I actually have 2 of them and am probably going to sell the Stalker version as I have too many shotguns in the safe and am currently on a Super-X 1 buying spree! lol! It only has 59 shots thru it (1 round of trap doubles and 9 slugs). Messages me if you want more details, I'll give 10 days to try it... Like it, keep it. Don't like it, send it back!
