Hello ,

Quick question: I'm new to 3gun. I am very happy with my rifle. I've gotten 1inch groups out of it. it is a match grade barrel. So I was doing some drills and realized that it was getting pretty hot. Since there's no chrome lining in the barrel, and I dont want to shoot the barrel out, what are your thoughts on a 'practice rifle.'

It would have to serve as a backup rifle as well , which is my next dilemma: should I spend upwards of $1,500 on a similar ar? Or get like a Smith and Wesson sport for practice and backup? Problem is that I dont know if my backup should shoot as good as my primary.

With the m&p sport, I'd at least want to swap the handguard for a free-float. That puts the price up to about $1,200. Then I'm not sure if I'd need to do the trigger? That would put me at $1,500. A sti is $1,500.

Input?

Guns get hot. New AR barrels are a lot cheaper than $1500. So are other AR spare parts.

As long as your rifle remains accurate enough and reliable, I don't see the need for a complete backup or practice rifle. If you do go with a spare, it should mirror your match rifle in functionality and shape.

so do you more experienced shooters have backup rifles?

Thanks! Keep the info coming!

Sort of, I guess. I have other ARs I can use if my Armalite breaks, but not an identically configured spare. If breakage was to happen at a match, I'd just borrow a rifle from a squad mate.

'Usually only bring one rifle to a match... the AR is a pretty reliable rifle, but it's a good idea to have a few key spare parts on hand.
Not entirely convinced a whole spare gun is necessary. 'Not in my experience anyway.

My match guns get demoted to "backup" when I get new match guns. That goes for rifle, pistol and shotgun.

Typically I just carry spare parts to matches. If it's beyond repair, I try and find some kind person to borrow from.
