Hey y'all. So kinda interested in 3 gun stuff - I'm in Red Deer in the patch and ya , scheduling has been my bane forever cause of it( hard to join anything , or volunteer or be with family ) Anywhoo , is there 3 gun comp in Rocky Mountain House or possibly Genesee ? I got the guns ( not an AR , but an M305a that seems damn good ) , and gear , maybe not super fancy stuff but more pratical tactical stuff ...... anyhow what's the deal please ? Can I drop in and compete / train etc etc. Join the range sure , but do I gotta join a club of a club or so. Just looking to possibly get my foot in the door - amateur hour. I did the long range game for years , now it's time for fun

Hey thanks in advance.

Equipment:

-get a lot of magazines ! Running with a M305a, you are limited to 5 rounds magazines. Get a chest rig with 8 vertical molle slot and fill it with HSGI double rifle tacos. That will bring you up to 40 rounds on your chest. Put another one on your belt + one on your rifle, you're up to 50 rifle rounds.

-pistol is very easy: mount your mag pouches to your belt along with your holster.

-shotgun: the funny part ! You can either run a leg rig with shells, mount shell holders in front of your tacos or above your tacos. Shotgun is what makes/breaks you during matches.

All I use is "tactical/practical" stuff for 3guns which is mostly my work gear. It works and if you put yourself into it you will have fun. My advice is to register to a match, go and have fun with what you have.

The Number one Item you need is a proper belt with mag holder, shot shell caddy and holster.

A 3 gun belt has a inner velcro belt with an outer rigid belt that supports your attachments. An Erine Hill belt is reasonably priced and exactly what you'd want. I would honestly avoid the chest rig and leg strap stuff. Buy once, cry once.

What pistol and shot gun are you going to run? That will help with what gear you'll need.

If you’re gonna shoot a .308, run a .45 1911 and a pump shotgun as well. Avoid optics. Some 3G matches have a Heavy Metal division. You will have fewer competition in this division which increase your chance at prizes and bragging rights.

Ray from wasp told me about this. Yes interested. I got the garand , M1a , yup 1911 and a defender pistol grip pump shotty ( would that be ideal or do I need the stock - thru away )!
Definatley up my alley as well. TY

Sounds good so far. I got a chest rig with 5 holders , 2 double mag holder for belt for the 305a carbine, 6 my standard 20 round mags and 2 30 steel ones that came with the gun so sweet that's 40 rounds ,

I got the 1911 semi custom pretty bad ass pistol , but only 3 mags so 24 shots - is that enough ? 2 styles of double mag pouches so that's covered for 3 mags anyway. Also got the glock 48 with 4 mags ATM so that's 40 rounds

And latest toy is a benelli m4 clone from S and J - Turknelli , 7 rounds ghost loaded , 4 caddies coming in the 2 styles for me to see what I like and which way I like to do it with ( for reloads , actually looking into upgrading the loading port for faster loading ATM ) , plus I got a shotshell molle pouch drops down thing holds like 25 I think. How many shells are needed in the shotgun part ... eww plus the match saver on - just cause it looks cool lol , but would be nice to use it for real

You may need the chest rig to hold your magazine-laden belt up and keep it from taking your pants down to your boots. :)

Before you get too crazy with gear, reach out to your local match directors and get a sense of the types of stages they run. No sense running around with 50 rifle rounds and 40 shotgun shells if the majority of stages you shoot have low round counts...and vice versa.

I shot a 4 stage multigun match last weekend that had 66 total rifle and 68 for pistol. Shot another match a few weeks ago in a different region where the round count was well over a hundred each for rifle and pistol and 88 for shotgun (in 5 stages)...Different match directors have different styles. See what the people do where you plan to shoot and set up your gear accordingly.

You're in a good location to hit up lots of three guns matches. Lots of matches south of you too.

Best thing you can do is hit up some matches with what you got, sounds like you can already carry most of what you need. The trick is figuring out how you like to kit. You'll see what people are running and most are willing to let you run their gear.

As for 1911 mags, Brownells makes a good one, a three pack delivered is $100cad.

Thanks for the tips. I'll settle on Genessee first as my cabin and ammo bin is near by

I've been in contact thru Facebook now a little thru the night with someone high up there for 3 gun. Told me yup 40-50 pistol rounds so I'm gonna order 2 more 8 round and 1 10 round cobra mags to keep them all the same brand etcetc gives me up to 50 ..... after that I'm bumming , I'll need some more mag holders too. Guy that sold me that 45 gave me 1 double speed / tension holder so gonna try to get 2 more of the same I guess . Or a single in there.

Think I've got it figured for shotshell loading fast too , but it's dam hard just doubles , so in touch with tac ord to open my loading port.

Question for shotgun shells - does everyone run those shell caddies or could you just use a dump pouch full of shells ?

For loading doubles or quads, it's all about how the shells are aligned in your hand. A caddy like the invictus practical ones are designed so the shells are held in place exactly how you'd grab them to load them.

Speed loading a shotgun seems to be the area most people struggle to master in order to lower stage times. A proper caddy is crucial to lower stage times.

I have a 12 shell caddy that attaches to my belt, I also have a 24 shell chest strap for shotgun only stages.

Wolverine is an invictus practical dealer. Sometimes you can find them on the EE

I know guys who use dump pouches full of shells but it’s definitely more competitive (and for some, more fun) to use some sort of shell caddy - that is what the majority of participants use.

For the CHAS 3-gun matches (Genesee) you just need to register. But, do so quick as they fill up super fast. If you get into the CHAS 3-gun facebook group you'll get the best information.

Last year I shot my M305 (since been sold) at some CHAS matches. I would strongly encourage you to get some 10rnd XCR-M magazines and use those. I found it very helpful to have 3-d printed mag extensions as well. The short XCR-M mags don't fit well in magpouches.

This year CHAS has a Heavy Metal Pro division, but only a couple of us are shooting it. It would be great to see more participating in this division. As a plus, you only need on round on target with Heavy Metal. I've joked that Heavy Metal should be able to shoot through cover without penalty (7.62x51 has been turning cover into concealment since the '50s) :) .

Speaking from experience, get shell caddies and learn how to dual-load and/or quad load. The shotgun stages can make or break a match, depending on the round count.

Also, the guys at CHAS 3-gun are great for letting you borrow equipment and giving good advice. Don't be afraid to show up to a match as a spectator and ask questions.

Copy that. You bet. I have one at home I've been practising with 2x3( holds 6) and 3 more otw from a dude on here 1 that's a quad load style ( I'm not ready for that. Lol ) and the other type with 4 in a stack. Really loving it , the practise part. When I get home gonna practise some more and see what works .... with my ghost load in the shotty and those caddies that's 25 ..... currently working on minimizing my belt attachment to just shotgun

Hehe. Ya it's fun. It's dam hard on my gun anyway. Might send off to modify loading port , then possible maybe for me to do that quad loading after I get proficient in double first.

Might bring a dump pouch though jic I fumble the loadins , go back to old fashioned , as if I do compete , pressures gonna be huge
