I'd like to try shooting 3 gun. Obviously I've never tried before but have lots of experience shooting all 3 types of gun but never in a speed related competition. Can a person get started with simply a good pistol, shotgun and semi auto rifle? Obviously to be competitive a good set up for each firearm is required but if I wanted to start shooting 3 gun at my local club when they put on 3 gun shoots could I get going with my Sig P226 w/3 mags, either a pump or semi auto 12 gauge and an SKS in a tapco stock w/3-5 round mags?

Give me your thoughts on what a good starter kit is for 3 gun.

I have a Sig P226 9mm or a 1911 .45 for pistols
An 870,Jc Higgins model 20 for pump of a browning gold or an 11-87 auto 12 gauges
As for auto rifles I have an sks or a mossberg 715 .22. Both have RDS.

Can you even use a .22 for this #### or am I totally out to lunch.

I'm very experienced as a shooter but know sweet fanny adams about 3 gun besides it looks fun as hell.

Let me know your thoughts fellas. Thanks

Those guns will all work for trying 3 gun out to see if you like it.

As long as you have a good holster, you can stuff your spare mags and shells into your pockets. See what other folks are using for gear before you buy new stuff. 15 rounds for your rifle is not likely to be enough for many stages. If you can still use stripper clips that will suffice for stages requiring more than 15.

Be aware that many clubs do not permit steel core or jacketed ammo, so you may need to find other ammo for your SKS.

You have enough to start out. You will have to check with individual clubs to see if you can use rimfire or not. Some allow it. Medicine Hat had a rimfire division in all their matches but now that the are using 3 Gun Nation rules I am not sure if that will continue. As Steve pointed out steel core ammo can be a problem.

Medicine Hat is running a 4 stage Halloween match on either 28 or 29 Oct. It will be more of a fun match and will likely have some zombie targets or similar rather than the traditional 3 gun targets.

The Sig and really any shotgun will work, the SKS mags will be a weak point but that’s fine to start out with. Once you run a match or two and decide if you like it, then you can start building your kit. 3 gun is very much ‘run what ya brung’ and 3 gunners are generally very accommodating. Most people start out with whatever they had lying around and slowly build as they find weak spots. Check with your local club about steel core ammo and holster safety requirements but other than that, go out, have fun, and ask lots of questions.

Sig, 870 and the SKS, perfect equipment.
As mentioned you will need a holster and something to hold the consumables. Pockets or a dump pouch will work.
A stripper clip with only 5 rounds on it work good, I can’t see many clubs allowing steel core to be used on their steel, a magnet will answer that issue quickly.
And you are correct, it is fun!

If i were you i would invest in a couple more pistol mags and probably 2-3 more rifle mags as a minimun. Your going to want a way to carry all that stuff as well. I know there are a couple guys that shoot our matches running sks. If i were you i would hold out on spending big money on gear right away, get a decent belt and holster setup (i like retention as you will be doing a bunch of running around and a dropped pistol will get you a dq) hang some sort of pouch for your shotgun shells and some cheapo mag pouches. Once you shoot a couple matches you will be exposed to lots of gear and guys are usually pretty good about letting you try stuff. Ive changed my setup twice so far and will be making some tweaks for next season.
