3 Gun For The Beginner

Stop worrying about the ideal setup for now, and get to a match. Like you said, the season is almost over. Get one under your belt so you know what it's about and worry about your gear in the offseason when you have a better idea of what you need.

^^^This...Virtually everyone I know competed in their first match with less than ideal equipment...in my case, an old Mossberg 500 pump, a dump pouch of shells and an SKS with detachable duckbill mags. Your current gear puts you miles ahead of that.

Get out and try it...if you enjoy yourself, upgrade to your hearts content (if you are like me, that'll be a journey in and of itself)...If you find 3 Gun is not your thing after trying it out, then you didn't just dump a pile of money on gear you don't need.

But I think you will love it...

I am a total beginner too. But I realize this after my life's first run: no matter what you choose, shoot the hell out of all your gears with current setup. Put a lot of rounds in them in one session to make sure they will perform, reload fine with all mags and nothing will come loose etc etc, thus, no surprises and disappointments while running the stages. Familiarity and confidence (some call it faith) in your gear far out weights what fancy gear to use.

But do keep in mind, things will still go wrong ;)

This x2. Familiar and reliable gear is almost always better than something new and untested. Practice with your setup, get some dummy shotgun rounds and empty mags and practice dry reloads. Moving gear on your belt or switching to new gear right before a match increases the room for error.

Also you don't NEED to have a bunch of chokes and change them stage by stage. Some guys like to but my first 3 gun shotgun was a fixed Full choke and my current one I only use a Light Modified, never had any need for anything else.

Just run what ya brung and have fun, everyone is different and as you get more used to it you can identify your personal/gear weaknesses and address them. And the best part about 3 gun is the community. People are always happy to answer questions, talk about strategy and gear, let you look at their gear, maybe even let you try theirs.
