Hey everyone,

I am almost done my custom rifle build, and I am very interested in honing my skills in 3-Gun and IDPA matches. The problem is, I don't even know where to begin at all. I am not a good shot and I wanted to get into these types of matches to improve my skills.

Are any of you able to point me into the right direction as to where to begin my journey? Does Ontario even have a thriving 3-gun and IDPA matches?

Thanks to all who post!

D

I would suggest trying to find a 3 gun league or ipsc to improve skills. Idpa has low round counts and focuses on concealed carry defencive shooting, not very practical for Canada. 3 gun will have you practising all platforms with a moderate round count over several unique firing positions.

Michigan Multi-Gun at Livingston Gun Club in Brighton. Club level matches every month. Much better than Ontario matches in round count, stage layout and quality. No holster qualification required. The guys there are pretty sharp and safe, they will stop and send you home if you do something wrong.

How do you get the necessary permits. Check out losttarget com and see the section on Firearms Laws --> visitors to the US

Thanks for all the responses so far. I am located in the GTA. My club is in Grey County (re: Collingwood area). Essentially, I want to be able to wear all my tactical gear, and shoot my stock (re: non-race) pistols and rifles and become a better shooter so that I will be able to compartmentalize things like shooting accurately, and loading while on the move.

Which sport should I be looking at? IDPA or 3-Gun?

IDPA is a handgun sport, so 3 gun more closely reflects your intended purpose - strictly speaking. That said, it depends on what a particular club offers.

If your primary goal is to wear your tactical gear, i would think all you would need is a full length mirror.

Sounds like the CQB section (forum below action shooting) is more up your alley.
Rifle and pistol shooting. No holster qualifications. Most are at base borden, which is not far from you.
And all the tactical gear you can shake a stick at.

Lol. Fair enough. Basically I just want to be able to wear my chest rig to hold my mags and such as opposed to those slick race belts and the like. Nothing against that, but it's just not my style.
