Can anyone tell me what most 3 gun shooters are using for a shotgun and rifle? I was assuming a pump gun and an AR. Let me know what you are shooting and why or what you have seen people shooting.
Thanks.

Mag capacity is the key

Any rifle that will let you use the 10 round AR pistol mags
AR's are the most popular, but I've seen Tavor, SL8, AR180b, XCR, and they are all fine for 3gunning.
For shotguns, a lot of Remington 870 and Mossberg pumps here. A lot of Benelli semi autos down south, but because of mag restrictions, a pump action is the way to go here...

three? only three?! i imagine such a creature exists but if i was limited to three it would be a 22 rimfire, a 12 gauge and a all rounder like the 270-30-06 or a seven mag. action types would be lever for the 22, pump for the twelve and bolt for the big game.

hmm I figure you picked this forum up in the recent threads section on the front page:p
these firearms you mention are great for the purpose YOU are thinking about but this is being posted in the ACTION SHOOTING GAMES. The 3 gun type of competition involves a rifle a pistol and a shotgun, point of it is completing a speed course. And I've never participated but I'm pretty sure .22 rimfire is not an accepted caliber.

usually the setup includes an ar-15 as the rifle, not a lever gun...

LOL.......you totally missed the point of the original post.
This is the ACTION forum!

He is asking about guns for 3 gun matches.

So in answer to the question.

AR15 and Mossberg 590 or tricked out 870

For 3-gunning?

Rifle-wise, "tactical" carbines seem to the order of the day. Personally, I've observed that AR platforms appear to be dominating in that field. But I've also seen M1 carbines, Beretta CX4's (I DID buy mine for 3-gun, after all), SKS in various iterations, a tacticooled Mini-14, and even one guy I shoot with does his 3-gunning with a lever-action rifle. And just this weekend I got to test-drive a Tavor for a club-level 3-gun shoot. :D

In terms of shotguns, I've seen everything from cheap Chinese knockoffs to BBB's uber-shotguns. But the most popular appear to be the Mossberg 590 and Remington 870 platforms.

AR 15 is king for the three gun........just depends on manufacturer and configuration/optics.

For the shotgun, 590 Mossberg seems to be the favourite, but 870's are good too.

Seems to be a trend in answers, huh?:D

To be competitive in Canada you will need a rifle that will accept the 10 round LAR mags. Just about any semi rifle that accepts them will do if it is MOA accurate and reliable. I use a Rob Arm XCR because it is ultra reliable and sub MOA accurate. On my squad at the 3 Gun Nationals this past summer there were only 2 rifles that did not have a jam and they were both XCR’s. At the USPSA Multi Gun Nationals everyone at the top of the game shot an AR platform. I am looking into moving to a Stag AR Platform because I can also use it to shoot Service Rifle. I have done some research and the Stags seem to be amongst the top of the AR’s heap.

As for shotguns, to be competitive in Canada you will need a pump action as legally they can be loaded with more shells. In Canada we are only allowed 5 shells in the Mag of a semi shotgun and this severely limits one’s ability to do well; they are slow to reload! Most of the top shooters in North America use either a Benelli or a Remington. Either will serve you well. I lean towards the Remingtons because I have used them all my life and they have proved to be ultra reliable. In addition, they are now quite reasonable to buy. If you will be shooting 3 Gun in the U.S. the Semi shotgun is preferred. The difference between shooting a semi and a pump is about .3 of a seconds per shot, the semi is that much faster, however; it must be remembered that it takes 1 – 1.5 seconds to put a shell in the mag of that semi.

Good luck with whatever you choose! 3 Gun is a freaking blast; I think the most fun of all the gun games!

Is shoot 3-gun in the US.

My tools include a stock RRA 16" AR, a benelli M4 and a Valtro 1911 in .45

I have being shooting 3 gun for awhile now. I use either my stag or colt AR and I have been using a 590 but just found a beretta 1201fp that I am looking at using more. The final piece is my Kimber warrior. They have served me well.

so do you live in the US or have a US address or compete with 10 round mags or what? You buy new high cap mags every trip?

Lots of rifles get used but anyone serious will have something that takes LAR mags and most likely an AR-15.

870's and 590's rule the shotguns.

I would agree that the majority of carbines are ARs but the other 45% are split up.

Storms, 10 round mags usually running the same Beretta pistol.

Levers, the Cowboy guys who switch over really know the ins and outs of these rifles and can out run any AR based on stage round count and distance.

Mini 14's, M1 Carbines, 7615's, even a Tavor found it's way out this past weekend.

For shotguns 870's hold the majority followed by Mossbergs and then Winchesters.

Here's a few pics from last weekend.

'Been to matches where pistol cal. carbines are alowed, but they're scored as... pistols. 'Not a significant factor for the competitor for most stages, but watching a guy tring to clean a plate rack at 100yrds with a 9mmAR can be a bit tiresome...:D the 10mm HK MP5 wasn't so bad though:)

I started with a Storm in 9...then got and Olympic Arms (used .40 Glock mags)

Then those bastards at EESA remembered that they had a 300 meter range. ;)

Now I have a proper AR in .223 (the best tool for the job)
