3 gun Mag fed pump popularity this summer?

Hey guys, I'm just curious to know if many mag fed pumps were used this summer in 3 gun competition.
I posted in the black shotgun forum about any experiences ppl had with a couple options I'm considering and how wise it would be to use a pump mag fed next summer. (Functionality and even mag storage and general hints and tips)

I'm more just asking if the mag fed pumps were popular, and if so, was there any particular brand (ex-sap6 comp, Uzkon as46, derya av-100 etc) that stood out in particular, whether they stood out for good reasons or bad. Also, what kind of kit (mag pouches/chest rig carry options) were people using to feed these mag fed pumps. And more so, if someone had a recommendation for me going forward.

Valtro PM5 is one of the only OUT OF THE BOX mag fed pumps that works reliably enough for 3gun.

All others need modifications and tweaking to get it running up to par. (From what I have seen at our matches)

With that being said if you can get the SAP6 running smooth (Or mod the SAP mags to work in the Valtro) having 11 round mags is a MAJOR advantage over an autoloader. Especially if the stages all start with empty shotguns. Autoloaders only really shine when all the targets are really close in a nice row. If you have a big transition between targets you can run the pump just as fast.

All of this is IMHO. Others will argue.

Also Mag feds will automatically bump you up to Open class (Or Unlimited). With that being said the top two shooters in Unlimited Class at CDTSA are running mag fed pumps and are running the fastest over all times.
 
Despite their increased availability this year I have not seen any increase in their popularity for 3 gun. I'd speculate and say that the holy grail of mag fed shotguns (reliability) still hasn't been attained. Could also be that despite increased availability of mag fed shotguns there has not been a corresponding increase in availability of magazines but I honestly don't know if that is the case or not. All I can say is that in my neck of the woods, they still don't seem to be popular at all.
 
I bought an Alphaarms SA15 for just this reason as I have been running a Benneli Nova up till now . After a lot of tweaking with the mags it is running about 85% reliability and only with Federal ammo so I switched back to using the Nova until I get it to run better. I am sending it back to Wolverine in the hopes they can fix it. The loading of the 5 round mag is slower than loading it directly into my Nova so on a stage this weekend I was at a disadvantage at the start due to the stage starting with 5 loose rounds . I have 6 mags for it and use m14 pouches as they fit the mag as well as a double AR mag pouch (old Canadian Army issue) .I went back to using a tacvest instead of the belt I used for my nova as I was carrying 4 shotgun mags,4 pistol mags and 4 AR mags which proved too many for my belt.

If you want to venture down to milo this coming weekend for a 3gun match your more then welcome to check it out. (There will be an SAP6 there for sure too)

We did a lot of testing. 5 rounds mags are not much of an advantage. 7 is better, 11 is best. (Except running with an 11 rounds shotgun mag on your hip SUCKS, they are ridiculous in length)
 
Ahhh I hear both of what you guys are saying, thanks for the info guys. And yeah those 11 rd sap6 mags and the 10 Uzkon/Derya ones are massive...I was thinking about maybe putting them on a micro chest rig with hsgi taco pouches (ex the hsgi AO small chest rig or any smaller one capable of holding...what...say 3 of them?)

Don't tell that to an American. They like to run 28 round Saiga style mags down there in 3gun Open division. Looks like a huge banana, front of mag is near the front of the barrel. Doesn't fit in any dump box / barrel.

After this weekends match, would you be able to give me alittle run down on how it went with that sap6? (Gear choices for carrying mags+reliability etc)
That would be amazing, and may solidify my decision on whether or not to get one or just a super nova haha

I personally run a Valtro with 1 sap mag and the rest standard 7 round mags.
If you can stage the shotgun mag in, and only keep the 7 rounder on your belt it is not a problem. (Not many stages go over 18 round shotgun)

If you have to carry the 11 rounder on you, then I use an extended taco. It the only thing I found that would fit it. It flops a bit when you run though, so dont put it up against your ribs. Hang it low on the back was OK for me.

Valtro had only one hic up on me and that was the modified SAP mag. (ALL shotguns we hicup eventually, my autoloading M4 benelli has failed to eject before)

The SAP6 guy normally has all of his matches recorded and online but I have not seen his last run, I think he had more problems last time. (The guy with the SAP6 is a professional machinist and did some mods to his boom stick)

Ah Okok that's perfect advice, thank you! Did your Valtro come with chokes? I see WestRifle has them on sale, and the mags are 90 something haha wow... But maybe I'll just buy this instead of the sap. What sort of modifications did u make to the magazines to make them run in the Valtro?

I see your location shows as Northern AB. If you intend to shoot 3 gun in the Peace Country with MP3G there are a couple of points you may not be aware of.

A mag fed shotgun will put you in the Open division. Not a big deal, just a fact. Also, you will see many stages with shotgun round counts over 20, and as much as 35. PR, GP, and FSJ all have range limitations which make some stages shotgun only. Hence the larger round counts.

There is one more regular season match in GP this Saturday, the 17th, and the team match in PR Oct. 1/2. If you can make it to either of them you'll be able to see what guys are using and what works.

I guarantee you will see folks loading tube-mag guns faster than you can change a box mag. Quad loading is extremely quick when you get it down.
 
Aahhhhh ok ok gotcha Stevo, thanks for the heads up! I'll be at work those weekends, otherwise making the trip would definitely be worth it.
I appreciate the reply though, I'm just trying to get my bearings that's all, figure out things (gear & firearms etc) that are practical and I think I'd be interested in using.
I wish I was off work...
