Hey guys, need to pick your brain and get some thoughts on how and where to get gear suitable for 3 gun. I'm not looking for anything crazy that needs to be able to support a week long skirmish,:p just the bare minimum to run a stage. At most, room for 3 pistol mags, 4 ar mags and 20 shotshells. I see guys wearing awesome looking gear but I'm not needing to go all out.

I was away from 3 gun for a bit, and I'm kinda hillbilly compared to the other shooters. While AR mags fit in back pockets of jeans, and jacket pockets stuffed with shotshells works, I'm thinking I need to step it up a bit. Any thoughts or a point in the right direction appreciated.

I'd run a belt, not a vest/chest rig. Even the CQB guys are switching to belts. If you REALLY wanna cheap out on rifle mag pouches, you can get these knockoffs at $17 per pair, go on dx dot com and search 124402 Get at least 2 even though I only ran 1 double on my only 3gun match. Ran the doubles reliably at an IPSC rifle match and a bunch of club activities, no problems. These straps like WIDE belts, so I'd recommend a 2" duty belt like:
ht tp://www.tetragon.ca/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=HT%2D398 <-- you can run it with your existing belt's inner
If you don't have handgun mag pouches, Bladetech doubles will be ok for 3gun, or splurge and get DAA racers if you plan on doing IPSC
I don't know enough on shotshell holders to be able to offer advice, so I'll let someone else chime in

I use HSGI double stacks (1 pistol & 1 rifle) on the belt. If you have 3 of them that covers your pistol and rifle mag requirements, except for the 4th mag.

As for 20 shells depends on how you load. Could use 5 x 4 shell caddies across the front of your belt. Or use the double stack, which fits 8 but they are pretty bulky and would be sticking out a bit up front.

Ignore the naysayers and do what you like. There have been people running successfully with homemade rigs, you need to find what fits and works for you and stick with it.

My vest (this is not even its final form!) is an older Eagle CIRAS vest with softarmor and at times, I run plates. You can pick one up for $100 or less on the EE if they come up (or something similar) I liked this one because of the price and abit of flexibility.

Speed is directly related to the way you train and how much of it you do with your configuration.

If something does not work, change it and train some more.

We've done a little small 3-gun at TMSA but are most known for our TacRifle matches (and of course our range has a lot of IPSC). Rifle will be the factor that makes you decide between various options. We've been doing rifle a loooong time and have gone through all the fads! Belts, Drop legs, Vests, Plate Carriers, etc. Through all the color fads too, black, OD, dessert tan, multicam and now getting into "urban grey". Yup this is tactical fashion, urban grey is in!

A belt alone is not always faster than all other combinations of equipment because of bad Canadian laws and size requirements (way easier in the US with normal capacity magazines). Especially with 5 round rifle mags (yes many people run pistol magazines, but not all and technically the laws we must cater our rules too). We typically run a 26 round rifle stage which is 5+ rifle mags. That can be unwieldy to manage on a belt alone, let alone with 20 shot shells and 3 handgun mags (and maybe a multitool, or other accessories). In the US (ie: Custer) they run 2 AR mags, one primary 30-60 round and one backup 30 round in case of malfunction, that's it! Easy to fit on any belt system.

But up here with 5+ mags, guys who have the belt space for all this in a neat flat layout generally have a little more girth in which case they aren't that fast when measured by overall match standings. Guys who are in amazing athletic shape sporting a 32-34" waste can't fit all that crap on their waste without double stacking stuff everywhere. Double stacked AR mags, double stacked shotshell holders, etc. Makes you wide and awkward and more likely to fumble a reload and grab the wrong thing. I've seen guys try to put a pistol mag in their AR or try to put the but end of a mag in their AR etc... all solvable with practice. But I'm just pointing out that its not the automatic defacto winner.

A vest easily doubles up your capacity and can be removed when not needed to split up your gear/weight between belt + vest. The guys who do run a belt end up adding a drop leg thigh rig with extra AR mags (2-3 on the belt flat, 2+ on the thigh flat). This may be faster because of lower overall weight and maintaining low profile. But ultimately 'Cyanide Ride' is correct - do what you like and what works for your body type and then practice! No two people are shaped the same or are in the same physical shape - your mileage will vary. One size fits all solutions don't work.

Several of our top placements at matches are guys with plate carriers and full gear that many would say is "heavy" or "bulky" but it works for them and they practice. But one of the guys most frequently in first place is a belt + drop leg thigh rig. But he also runs like mad - so is it his equipment, or is it just that he's in good shape? (He also has one of the top custom built fully loaded ARs, so that's another factor in the placements).

Great information! I'm going to start by running an old surplus plate carrier as that is what my budget dictates. Will try to learn as much as possible before sinking too many $ into rigs.

Thing is...
When the phrase "3gun" gets used around here it isn't clearly defined.
For the IMGA 3gun I'm used to. .. Vests are absent. Nobody uses them.
For whatever other versions of 3gun games out there where pistols, rifles and shotguns are used. Perhaps vests are well suited.
In any case... all these games are timed based.
Use whatever gear you're fastest with.

There was a time where I was running a 4 pistol magazine pouch on my upper right chest. I surmised that the economy of motion would be faster since the magazine was already horizontal so all I would need to do was grip, rip, and move a small distance to the magwell of the pistol. This worked great until I started making some shooting errors of the course of fire and resorted to my last 10 years of training... And then started reaching for my waist for a reload. I moved the quad pouch back to my waist :)

It is alot of testing (and abit of the fun for me) to optimize your carry space. I like vests because it gives me more carrying space and options.

I recall one CHAS 3 gun I was carrying 100 rifle rounds and 60 pistol.

I understand what you are getting at, but I too am abit of a cheap skate but I'll pay for something if I think it is worth it. :)

Those that run in IMGA probably have gear light years ahead of mine, but I have seen on some occasion people running a basic chest harness that holds deuce or quad loaders. That could be called a "vest light" can it not?.

for shotgun shells, try this from us S&J hardware
18rds in the space of 2 ar15 mags, and can be deployed as a side saddle

Nice to see you still doing your thing Simon :)

Incase anyone was wondering, Simon was very kind in helping me build me 930 SPX when everyone else just had question marks floating above their heads.

Please tell me someone has set up a bayonet stage....

I'd rock the bayo regardless if the RO's would let me!!
