3 gun newbie setup question

Hey everyone,

Recently licensed, found out about 3 gun comp and was instantly interested, I have a general idea of how to get involved and have the support of local members of a club and the local range, my question today however is about gear setup. I know it's totally personal preference and all about trying different firearms and such- I'm comfortable with my pistol setup, a 9mm USP or a PPQ Navy- shotgun wise I'm still trying to figure out if I want to go with my Winchester SXP Camp or explore other options. The big question is what to use for rifle. I've been leaning towards a XCR-L Competition, I feel like the lightweight nature of it and it seemingly being fairly compact would be quite beneficial. The only other rifle I've been eyeing is a HK 416, but I can't afford a second mortgage so not going to happen!

Any insight or preference from experience would be muchly appreciated. Thanks

Do you currently have a suitable rifle?

The overwhelming majority of rifles at MP3G matches are AR15s. It really doesn't matter what kind as long as it's reliable.
 
I've seen guys run XCR-L's, VZ-58's, even an MR-1, but the majority run AR's of some sort. It's truly your preference. What are you comfortable with.
 
Thanks for the feedback guys. I don't have a suitable rifle in the sense that I have a HK SL-8 with a lower conversion setup for distance shooting, and a k98. I've not really found an AR15 style I like, aside from the HK which is prohibitively expensive, which is why I was leaning towards the XCR. It might be nice to have an unrestricted so I have more flexibility with where I shoot but I know the comps are at ranges etc. I've done a bit of research but being new to this I'm not certain of which are the more reliable manufacturers who will also have a wide range of parts available in Canada should I need or choose to modify or replace parts. (I'm learning all about what a nightmare that can be with my HKs)
 
Just my 2 cents, but what about a VZ58 in 223 with an AR mag well adaptor and a left side charging handle. Mines light, relatively accurate and NR. I just purchased a smith&wesson M&P15 sport 2 AR. I've had similar questions before too and decided to go both routes, NR and Res, have one as a backup was my thinking. My biggest question now is belts/drop leg nylon fun

Of those two rifles I'd use the AR every time. That said, if the VZ works for you, then use it. I've yet to see a .223 VZ with mag adapter at a match.

Just say no to nylon drop-leg stuff. Get a good kydex belt holster.
 
Budget is dependent on the paycheck! trying to buy a new house right now so I'm not super keen on spending a lot- hence why the HK 416 is out of the question. I think max $3500 seems reasonable from what I've researched and talked to guys about, if a whole setup for that price is possible (based on what you have told me it should be) then even better. Feature-wise something fairly light and easy to move with, ergonomic with a common sense layout, spare part availability is a big feature too of course, that's why the XCR caught my attention, I liked how it felt, really ergonomic and simple layout, the ability to obtain spares from Robinson made me wary however. I'm not hellbent on needing a NR over a res, my logic felt like a NR would give me more training options on the acreage or safely away from a range.

I never considered a VZ58 to be honest, it's something I'd have to look into more!
 
An XCR will work for sure. There's a few of them being used successfully in MP3G. $3500 should get you the rifle and a decent optic if you want to run in the Pro-Stock division or you can shoot it with irons in Stock.

The ergos are better than most ARs which is good, though the extra length may cause minor issues over a shorter rifle in some stages.
