Hello all, I am keen to start 3 gun in the near future. I have a 16 in AR with a 4x Acog on it (TA01NSN) and I am thinking I would be better off with a 1x4 power scope. Matches are infrequent around here so not looking to spend a ton of cash or might even trade the acog. Distances will be short 50 yards or closer if that helps. Should I just run what I got for the 1-2 matches I can shoot per year or...? What would you do? Thanks.

If all you're shooting is within 50yards, I would run a red dot rather than a scope. No magnification is needed for that kind of range.

Yeah, within 50yds, just run a dot.. Later on you can get a flip magnifier if you stretch the legs a bit. Some suggestions.....

El-cheapo option - TRS-25 - might be dirt cheap, but it's still an excellent dot that will hold zero on whatever you throw it on. $100ish If you can't shoot accurately with it within 50yds, you need to replace your seeing eye dog

Slightly more expensive - Vortex SPARC - I like the smaller, crisper dot better and group better with it (could be psychological). $200ish

Bend over and limp off to battle with your butt hurting - That's where you get into your Aimpoints and Eotechs (kinda like Ford vs Chevy, 1911 vs Glock, best to try them out if you can) or go exotic with the Israeli Meprolight. - all of these are in the $500+ range

Definitely red dot or irons at that distance.
I was going to suggest a Sightmark 1-6, but only if you plan on shooting more distant shots.

I just run a red dot out to 200yards. Makes for a nice easy 50/200 yard zero. It is light and quick. I run a Vortex Sparc and really like it. I dumped my 1-4 cause I found it slowing me down and most targets engaged were under 100yards. We have the odd target between 100-300yards, but I feel I can still effectively engage those with a red dot. Key is to know your zero and your holds.

50 yards or less is a no brainer! So would be <300 yards. Any red dot dot should do you fine! I keep switching from an aimpoint micro and an Eotech EXPS, really enjoying the Eotech Reticle lately with the precise 1 MOA centre dot and 65 MOA ring for close holds etc.

Run what you have. If it's an issue, you'll find out in your first match if it's worth spending on any of the options listed here. Buddy does pretty well running a fixed 5x scope for cqb distance targets.

Hell, if you're fancy you can glue a piece of a zip tie on the top of your scope for a real high speed low drag solution...

These threads make me Lol and cry at the same time...
We debate and expend bytes and bytes over "what optic do I need"... Agonizing over the options.... And in the end...
'Still cant hit s***.

Meanwhile I've seen guys soundly out shoot us optic-ed guys at distances that without my 1-6 I couldn't even see.

Think about mounting an MRD on top of your ACOG. That's the arrangement I have but with a Leupold HAMR. I zero the MRD for 25/35 yards and the HAMR to 50-200. Works for me as it's fast and there's no controls to fuss with.
