3-Gun Rifle Choice

While I use an AR (and the 10 round mags are great so I'm told...), you could look at a CZ858-2 or CZ858-4V (Non-rest. & rest.) Use the cheap 7.62x39 round and still a fairly accurate gun with mags to change. Wolverine has them for ~$700. Same price as a Norinco M4 AR-Clone.

That leaves you $800 for ammo and accessories.

I bought a Roni conversion kit for my G17 to use as the carbine for 3-gun but now have an M4. It would fit in your price range and ammo is cheap after the fact. I never used the Roni kit in a match yet and now that I have the M4 I don't know if I will. :bangHead:

Has anyone used any of the conversion kits like the Roni for a 3-gun? If so what were the results? TIA

Now for a couple of questions.
1 - Is it harder to load the SKS using stripper clips than the other rifles with conventional mags?
2 - I have never fired a centerfire rifle which of the 3 do you feel would be the best caliber for 3 gun?
1) Yes. But a good stripper-clip load is better than a lousy mag load. Having said that, with equal levels of practice, the mag load is faster.

2) .223. Low recoil, faster hits. AR-15 for ergonomics, accuracy and aftermarket.

I don't imagine that would work very well on stages with shots past 100m.

I agree. The few I have shot never went past 100m but I know there are many that do. Usually the 4-guns have more than 100m for the precision and 100m and under for the carbine so it could serve a purpose. I guess I'll end up trying it sooner or later. I can bring both depending on the course of fire.

I think the OP should take a look at the Norinco M4. Tons of good reviews. I have only put about 300 rounds down it but flawless none the less.

In my opinion, if you don’t care how you place go with the SKS. It is cheap to buy and shoot. If however you start to get really interested in the 3 gun game (& it is an awesome game) and want to be competitive, you will need a rifle that uses 10 round Mags. To be competitive in Canada you just can’t use a platform that doesn’t hold 10 in the mag with one chambered. I hear you can use a certain 10 round bolt action rifle mag in the 305’s (M-14’s) but for multigun .223 is much faster to shoot than 7.62. Try an El Prez with both and you will see an almost unbelievable difference in the times with all A-Zone hits. In addition the pistol carbines like the MEC top end are neat and offer 10 round capacities however out past 100m they trajectories are drop fast. At 200m you are doing well to consistently hit IPSC targets with a pistol conversion let alone 8” or 10” plates. In IPSC the game is won by the most accurate shooters.

Looks like you might be better off buying an AR or XCR right from the start. Don’t forget with an AR you can shoot service rifle as well and that style of competition will really polish your accuracy and wind reading skills. In addition there are .22 conversions available for the AR that will really cut training costs. Hope this helps you with your choice!

Good luck with what ever you chose.

Thinking down the road a bit.... If you get bitten bad by the 3-gun bug you'll want to travel to the US to shoot matches.

The Norinco will not be able to go with you.

Actually it can.. since it would be under a temporary personal import only by a non-resident alien with the proper paperwork in advance. It cannot be left in the states whatsoever though.

Actually it can't... Thanks to ex us prez bill Clinton's import ban on all guns Norinco.

Gawd I hate it when people are wrong on the intertoobs...

LOL Happens all the time. I recently saw someone who has never shot an IDPA or IPSC match post on a thread regarding the two acting as if they are classified masters/grand masters. :p
