3 Gun Rifle Choice?

If your shooing in Canada almost anything but something that takes LAR magazines is an advantage.
If your shooting in the US you will want an AR type (No Norenco's and it must have a 16" barrel minimum) . Depending on how much you shoot you can get away with a low end AR but you do get what you pay for. As for what rifle almost all quality brand are good but everyone will have their idea on what it the best.

If you check out the AR15.com or the Brian Enos Forum you gen get more information on this subject than you can read in a lifetime.

Oh and stay away from all the "Tatical" stuff people bolt on their rifle in 3 Gun 90% of it is useless and it adds weight you won't want to carry around.

Having that same thought myself.. here's where I'm at..

16" - plentiful, easy to find.. however typically comes with carbine gas system (short sight radius, "overdrives" the bolt carrier making it a harsher operating rifle. With a mid length gas system, the dwell time (gas block to barrel end) is better and the recoil\bolt action much smoother

18" - fluted barrel with mid length gas system would be perfect, or adjustable gas port and rifle gas system.. longer sight radius. 18" is what Robbie Johnson, Daniel Horner, Jerry Mikulek run.. allows hand to be placed further down the rifle allowing you to "drive" the muzzle better..

You can read about the latest greatest gear until your eyes fall out...
The only guys who will ever know what works best for them are the ones that actually get out and shoot.

18" mid length gas is perfect? Afaik, one of the big reasons ppl goto 18 is that it is the shortest lengthy h for a rifle gas system.

Yes, 18 is the shortest barrel for a rifle gas system, but it leaves only 5.5" between the port and the end of the barrel, and some ammunition may not cycle correctly (short stroke) A 20" barrel with rifle length gas system, a 16" barrel with mid-length gas system, and a 14.5" barrel with carbine length gas system all have the same amount of dwell time (distance from the gas hole to the end of the barrel). That "typical" length is 7.5, "but" certainly with an adjustable gas block you'll have no problem..

Sight radius is a myth. The nearly unmeasurable difference in performance from a carbine radius to a rifle isn't worth worrying about. If you expect to be a contender you need to run optics anyway.

I say 16" mid length for the standard all around gun. Smoother cycling, easier on the inerternals and enough length to keep veolocities high without being too long. That being said, a buddy of mine destroyed a 3 gun match with a 10.5" with eotech. Shots ranged from 3 yards to 300 and there were no issues making hits.

Interesting....I didn't realize that dwell time was a factor.

Certainly, I run many different types of ammo through my 18" rifle length gas barrel with no problems. I find the recoil impulse is softer as well.

I've debated putting in a low mass carrier and buffer, but decided to stop spending money on my gear...I think its decent enough to cover 99% of my shooting.

....and even then it doesn't always matter.
There are guys shooting heavy metal irons than can out do open shooters.

As far as gear goes... People gotta stop putting the cart before the horse and decide what division they want shoot in and THEN gear up accordingly.

Had a few guys show up thinking they were in one division only to get bumped into open because... They bought without reading the rules.

I'm sure there are guys in HM that shoot better than open, but that just speaks to why that guy is in open? If it is for fun then by all means do it, otherwise consider where you wanna be.

IMO, read the rules, decide what division you want to shoot then buy the equipment you want.

I'm not savvy to rifle stuff, what's Dwell time ?

The opposite of not dwell time :D

PCC's are showing up more and more at our matches 50 yards and under the only difference seems to be they make a bigger hole than an AR. A lot of shooters seem to spend more time worrying about their gear then spending time on the range. Its fun to watch the cowboys who shoot our matches clean house with a lever and a sxs.

99% of the time it's the artist and not the brush. Last year one of the best shooters I know tanked on a 300 yard stage that I shot clean. I practiced, he didn't.....
