3 Gun Rifle Choice?

I'm not savvy to rifle stuff, what's Dwell time ?

Here's a very good description of the AR system. As many have noted, you certainly need range time, but it helps if you arrive at the range with a properly designed firearm, and ammunition load.. only "then" can experience help.. or in other words better to spend the non shooting hours of the day making sure your "range time" isn't simply clearing jams and wondering why it won't cycle..

I don't mean to hi-jack... but I'd like to narrow the suggestions and see what people think...

How about 3 Gun rifle choice, that isn't an AR? (or XCR, Swiss arms... etc)

The are some PCC's (Pistol Caliber Carbines) that are worth looking at as long as the range is less than 100 yards... but I'm thinking more conventional... maybe a lever action, or a Remi 7615 pump?

I know to play the game competitively an AR is pretty much required, but I just have to be different... I also don't like buying a restricted rifle I can't take hunting.

I'll agree, for all but an exceptional few, there's certainly no prize money in the sport, just the fun factor. At the USPSA Multigun nationals I'll swear the guys who had the most fun were shooting open sights, heavy metal. They'd have a little discussion about yardage (some targets to 400 yd), show up at the line and just start grinning as the "whoomp".....""ding" started to happen.. Find what makes you happy about participating, and go enjoy the sport!

I think a big factor in Canada is capacity.
The AR works well because we can use 10 round mags.
Plus its a user friendly platform.

Non AR, find something that you like, that you can shoot well, that takes AR mags and there is no reason for you not to be as competitive or more competitive than someone with an AR.

No prize money in Canada, but there are some serious prize tables in the US.

I love shooting iron sights and prefer it, but recently switched to scope due to the potential prizes when I go shoot in the States.

Basically there's a pistol version of the AR.
LAR-15
because it is a pistol, 10 round magazines are legal in Canada.

These same magazines work in "regular' AR's so tada! 10 round AR15 magazines.

Yeah... You can finish in 75th place and still go home with $500 + in prizes...
IIRC last years at FNH the prize table was worth about 250k..

What...? like 50 pistols.... and 10 FN SCARS.

A CZ858 will keep you competitive, provided you do your part.

An AR is the most logical and practical choice, but that being said, I've seen guys running very expensive rigs including swiss rifles with Elcan Spectres or Nightforce glass and offset reddots who couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. Gear only covers/compensates for so much. Shooter ability is still the most critical factor.

I have a built Tactical Innovations lower with JP trigger I am selling because I rather shoot my other rifle. PM me if interested.

Just get a JP CTR 2 They are expensive but are built for competition. Its about like shooting an Infinity pistol versus STI. You can really see where your money is going. They run like no other AR I've shot, no recoil, ultra fast. The F1 of rifles

Would one be laughed off the course if they showed up with something bigger than an ar? I'm a new shooter and just dropped a chunk of change on my pistol and don't have the cash for a high end rifle. I'm not a fan of the restricted rifles and the non restricted xcr's or sl8's are out of my price range just yet. If I showed up with an m305 with 10 round aia mags am I going to lose faster that the start buzzer?

Definitely not laughed off.
I'd personally have more respect for someone shooting a 308 vs 223.

It might get expensive though, depending on what you are paying for your ammo.

Also, not sure what divisions they run where you compete, but Heavy Metal division in the US is 30cal rifle, a .45 pistol and a pump shotgun.

If you have a lead on a few extra AIA mags, pm me please!!!

Ha ha I wish. All I can find is .303. I have a friend who's got his and her SMLE's though who I'm hoping to borrow from. I just wanted get out and shoot :D. I enjoy shooting with other shooting enthusiast.

A few years ago I won a local three gun with my M305. Every other shooter was shooting .223 or 7.62x39. The two AIA mags helped a lot.

Plus shooting a big-bore is character building.;)

Shoot a lever action during three gun if you really want to impress me. :D

'Had a fellow shoot one of our matches with his lever in .38.
Other than painfully slow reloading... Wasn't a huge problem.
Bullets hit where they were supposed to.

For sure. We shoot lever action during three-gun sometimes. Not really competitive for speed (hence my off hand comments), but lots of fun. :)
