Okay so I've been looking into doing 3 gun competitions later this year. I have the following:
-HK P30L LEM, 6 mags and holster/2 double mag pouches (IPSC set up)
-on way Benelli M4 entry with 2 on the belt shell caddies (each hold 4)
-Norinco 10.5" AR but I plan to get 14.5" Norinco
-6 Pmags but I plan to get 6 LAR mags with couplers
-plan to buy Eotech 512 b/c I can get for a good price vs others

Now my my questions are:
-How many mags do you carry for rifle/pistol-4?
-can I use a chest rig like this one or should I just get 2 kydex single mag pouches for LAR mags?
http://www.jtechgear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2&products_id=137
-do I need more shell caddies or is 8 rounds (2 holders) enough?
-do I need more pistol mag pouches or is 4 enough?
-is a 14.5" barrel on a semi shotgun okay, the 3 gun rules said longer barrel needed?
-What shotgun loads will I need for the sport?

Thanks for helping. Happy New Year!

It all depends on what you mean by "3-gun"

There are a few different flavours.

If you plan on traveling to the US for matches forget the Norinco's and forget the shorties.
16" min. For your rifle and 18.5" min on the shotgun.

Read up in the three gun at Brian Enos forums.

I only plan to shoot in Canada so what are the rules here. I'm not too knowledgeable about 3 gun but I mean competitions with a shotgun, rifle and pistol of a tactical nature?

Depends on the match, some matches have mandatory reloads. 4 should be good to start. I have 5 LAR mags and usually bring 5 pistol mags

Chest rigs aren't that popular at big matches. Some guys use em, but not too many. I have one that I never use.

Probably not, at least 4. They do have 4x4 ones now too, its like a stack shell caddy which holds eight.

-do I need more pistol mag pouches or is 4 enough?
Two double mag pouches should be enough. If you go through more than 40-50 rounds on a stage, the two extra seconds it takes to get another mag from a pocket won't be a big deal

-is a 14.5" barrel on a semi shotgun okay, the 3 gun rules said longer barrel needed?
Yes...I don't believe there is any rule regarding minimum barrel length, at least not in these parts.

-What shotgun loads will I need for the sport?

Bird, Usually #6 or smaller depending if you have chokes
Slugs, I use low recoil. Some matches have as many as 30-40 slugs in one match
00Buck, not terribly common, usually see it on some type of paper target which will score the pellets that strike the scoring zone. Again, I use low recoil. Flight control buckshot also works well for distant shots.

Hope this helps, sounds like you have enough gear to get started. Try and do a match with your current gear and go from there.

in canada the 3 gun is up to those who put on the match, some use a variation of IDPA/IPSC for the rules, but gear rules are not super universal at this point. ask the people who put on the 3gun in your area what their specific rules are

the main rule to know is what kind of holster they allow, most will not allow crossdraw or shoulder holster since they tend to "sweep" people in drawing. some say drop leg is ok, some say ONLY belt holster. and if there is any steel targets, NO STEEL AMMO,
Ask the people who put this on what their specific rules are.

what you have gear wise is certainly enough to show up and shoot, you will tweek you 3gun setup as time goes by anyway, for now your best off going and having some safe fun and learning all the safety stuff without really worrying about being competitive for the first little bit.

So 18" won't do?

I'll check my F6NIA permit, but I "think" is say's 18.5 is the min...
Turns out I am... WRONG on the internet :(

Quoted from my F6NIA:

"Rifles must have a barrel length of at least 16 inches and overall length not less than 26 inches. Shotguns must have a barrel length of at least 18 inches and an overall length not less than 26 inches"

So yeah.. 18" is GTG

A fair number of US shotguns are 18.5" to be sure that manufacturing variances keep them well over the 18" limit. So you were mislead, not really wrong.
