Hey CGN,

Im looking to get into 3 Gun and currently have a DDM4V5 and a CZ SP-01 , and need a shotgun to complete the set. Ive scoured the Internet for shotgun choices but it's mostly info from the US and many of the firearms aren't available in the particular configurations that are recommended like the mossberg 930 JM Pro or so on.

I plan on shooting in multi gun competitions in Canada only. Places where I currently do tac rifle competitions are just starting to do multi gun and there aren't any strict restrictions on shotgun type etc. and is fairly open. Additionally, my budget is about $1500 for the shotgun alone, I could do more or less, but considering I'm new to shotguns I would be happy with an entry level gun and spend the money on ammo. Please give me your advice, thank you.

"...my budget is..." Way more than you need. Look at a Rem 870 or Mossberg M500 with rifle sights. You can get a mag extension for either if you want. (Bit of fitting required for 870's these days. No big deal.) You'll have a good deer shotgun with either too. There isn't as much aftermarket stuff for Mossbergs though.
If you want a semi, look at a Rem 11-87 or Benelli.
"...Mossberg 930 JM Pro..." M500 marketing nonsense. Jerry Miculek is a good guy, but he's a revolver guy.

Actually, if you plan on going with a decent semi like an M2 or SBE2, $1500 is about right.

A shotgun with a 3.5" chamber will load 7 in the tube, and can often be ghost loaded to 9 total. Thats right on par with a pump like the 590.

Ultimately, do you want a semi or pump? If pump, I would say the 590 or 870 would serve just fine and leaves tons left in your budget. If semi, M2 is popular, but also look at the versamax, Super black eagle, 930, and there are some others as well.

I've only used the 930 and M2, and I would consider the M2 to be way ahead of the 930. Can't comment on the other semi's I've listed. One huge benefit for me to the M2 was that it is not a gas gun, so less maintenance

I was under the impression semi were far superior than pumps in a 3 gun type match. Does anyone know more about the versa max, what's the quality like?

As for the 930, is the value there ? Or is the M2 a clear choice over it ?

The 930 is a pretty decent value...but I don't think its conducive to the load 2/4 mehtod of loading. I wouldn't say semi's are far superior, some guns can run a pump gun pretty quick. Semi's do give you the ability to miss faster though

Never shot the tactical version of the versamax but if it's anything like my Remington Versamax Waterfowl, I don't think you will be disappointed.

If you can practice doing 100 load drills every day then a semi might be right, but as stated in other threads, stage design will be the deciding factor. If you can shoot a stage with a 10 round pump without a reload you win compared a semi where you might have to throw 2 or 3 rounds in while standing still. Stage design and ability to re load quickly will determine your best choice in Canada. U.S. is a completely different story. Also, anyone who thinks Miculek is only a "revolver shooter" has not seen him shoot. Mossberg quality control with the JM is more to blame than Miculek's ability to shoot a shotgun or rifle.
