What kind of shotgun would you all recommend for 3gun? an 18" 870?
what about a Mossberg 500?

thanks...

Hi

Either one you mentioned would be fine. I use a 500 myself, it has the advantage of holding one more round then an 870 in standard mag tube lengths.

The key is being familiar with the shotgun you are using and being able to load it fast under stress. The one 3 gun match I was at, most of the shooters show up with their 28" duck barrels on, they changed over to the short combo barrel they had, (some probably for the first time) and had a hell of a time when the stage called for them to load it after the buzzer went off.

Reliability is important also. Not fun watching some old guy with a 60+ year old riot gun that he has not used for over a decade, try and pump it after it jams up on the first shot.

I thought a shorty would be cool to shoot, but I would go with at least an 18" barrel. Couple more rounds to hold will help, especially if you reload "old school", one shell at a time. You are at a disadvantage if others use the tube reloaders with speed up reloading dramatically

I have a heavily modified 870 but if i were to do it over i would get a Mossy 590A1. It has all the parts needed and is cheaper then added stuff later.

My 870...

Remington Express Super Mag. 3.5" Chamber
20" Special Purposes Rifle Sight Barrel (love the choke option)
Fibre Optic Sights
+3 Mag extention
6 rd side panel
6 rd rear panel
GG&G Rear Sling Plate
R3 recoil pad with sythetic stock..best option for me(tried a choate and speedfeed)

I have a Mossy 590 A1.

You can shoot it out of the box and it's 8 plus 1 (max round limit for IPSC Standard Manual) and come with a nice set of Ghost Rings

Add a side saddle for $35 and you're good to go.

Gee thanks!:p
I decided to try the Trench gun for the first time the for the hell of it and to see how fast I could shoot it with the trigger held back. It was the first time I had ever fired the gun and as you noted it had some unresolved feeding issues. Spent most of the rest of the match checking out other competitors on my Valtro which I had out as a loaner for people, and had decided to leave my 11 shot Remington with the speedfeed attachment at home.

Actually my favorite gun for these games is a 14 inch barreled Remington 870. A lot quicker to manoeuver and fire on the low target count (6 targets or less) courses.:D

Ok, I have several votes for the mossy 590 A1 and I've also seen the 870.
I'm a total shotgun newb, so between the two which would be more reliable?

I know there's lots of aftermarket for the 870, and I was thinking 590, but the odd thread suggests they're not as accurate as one might like. So for the 590 shooters here...any truth to that?

And would you get 18.5 or 20"?

Thanks again.

get the 20" as the extension will not be longer than the barrel...i had a 5shot on my 20" looked like a bayonet...lol

go for the rem 870

As far as pump guns go, the Mossberg 500/590, Winchester 1300, and Remington 870 are all very good options. The advantage that the 870 has is that it is a steel receiver and weighs a bit more...you would not think it is much but there is less felt recoil in the heavier Remington. Not a major amount but it is noticable with slugs.

As much as I would love to take my 12.5" barrel with +2 mag extension to a 3-gun match it ends up the same length as a 20" barrel so I opt for the 20" barrel with sights on my 870.

tube reloaders are sh*t they will fail at the worst of times.
i have a lot of shotguns
my best is my m1 super 90 semi fastest shotgun in the world.
Then i have a rem 870 marine mag
and a 14 inc 870 wingaster kitted out.
all the others stuff is just more of the samething
go for the remington just dont buy the cheap stuff
bbb

Is there a particular version of the 870 that would be best suited?
I.e. for the Mossy 590, the 590A1 would be more suitable...I know the 870 comes in a lot of versions.

Which one in stock form has most of the goodies I would want in a tac shotty for 3gun? I.e. best platform to start building on.

Thanks.

Questar has them for $1099.00 Nice gun on Police Magnum, ready to go out of the box.

The cheaper option is to go with an 870 Express with rifle sights and 20" bbl, then add a side saddle carrier and +2 mag extension.

Both are good, one is a Volkswagon and one is a BMW, both get you there one does it in more style and comfort.

Cheers

What about a Valtro?? Nice option using box mags instead of the tube for faster reloads and the barrel comes ported......

Two things...

First off it would put you in Open Class...second, I've never seen one fire 5 consecutive rounds without jamming...

Nice looking shotgun though...if they were more reliable, I'd probably get one
