3 Gun Shotgun Question

I'm shooting my first 3 gun this weekend with my Mav 88. I eventually want to get something a bit better and was looking at semi autos. (Versamax, M3K, M3500, 930JM Pro, etc.) My budget being sub $1,000.

I'm sure I'll learn allot by seeing what everyone's running for equipment this weekend but I'd like some feedback from CGNers.

With capacity limited to 4+1, would it be beneficial to get a semi auto shotgun in 3.5" (usually 28" barrel) over a competition ready SA in 3" (usually 24" barrel)? I like the idea of a shorter barrel but does the extra 2.75" shell in the tube trump the shorter barrel?

If I get proficient in quad loading, should I maybe look into a nicer pump with a tube extension instead of an SA?

Semi auto vs pump is a personal thing.... I tend to like semis a lot more.

Capacity is nice, but reliability is better.... Focus on a decent brand and go with that. Having an extra shell is beneficial but if you can't Load or shoot well, it won't matter

Pretty much the only shotguns I see these days are benellis and versamax's. There are a few others, but they are the minority brands

Do you see mostly 28" barrels?
 
Zee, why (what rule) puts the 4+1 limit on shotgun capacity?

In that price range for a semi I would be picking from the Versa Max Sportsman and M3K. I have two VMs, both with 28" barrels, and I prefer that length, but 26" would be my next choice and 24" the choice after that.

Game loads and shot sizes are regulated at a lot of matches.

Most of the ones I shoot allow birdshot only.... 7.5 or smaller

You may have no more than 5 rounds in the MAGAZINE of a semi auto centre fire firearm. With a shotgun that is 5 rounds of the LONGEST shell it is chambered for. A 3" chambered shotgun is legal with 6 rounds of 2.75" shells in the magazine plus one in the chamber as the magazine will not hold more than 5 rounds of 3".
 
I have a Stoeger M3k with an extension tube. It was less then $1000 and I haven't had issues yet with it. No jams or anything. It only has a 3" receiver so I can only fit 6 shells in the tube, 1 in the chamber and 1 ghost loaded for a total of 8 however when I did my first 3gun, we always started with chamber empty and nothing on lifter so that puts me to at a max of 6 shells.

I'm leaning towards the M3K. Which extension did you put on it to get 6 rnds of 2.75"?
