3 Gun Shotgun

My new custom 3 Gun Shotgun with modifications. I spent the winter importing this thing and getting it ready to run for the season. I was a little worried I'd miss my Tac Ord 870 but this thing runs like a champ. Looking forward to the shooting season.

1. Benelli M2 Field 21" - Imported through IRUNGUNS.ca from the US. Saved a couple hundred bucks to pay for upgrades.



2. Mag tube extension from Nordic Components (Cactus Tactical), Permanently plugged to allow for five 3" shells, or six 2 3/4" shells. Also added a Hi-Viz front site and Nordic Clamp, and Nordic QD adaptor (Brownells).



3. Noveske QD adaptor for the butt stock (Amazon), and a shorter 1/2" gel recoil pad for the butt (Prophet River).



4. GG&G bolt release, polished and worked over (Wolverine, and me :)!), and Nordic charging handle (Brownells).



5. Taran Tactical lifter (Taran Tactical), low friction follower (Brownells), and custom load port modification (Me :)!).



If anyone knows where I can get a Salient, or TTI bolt carrier, I'd love to know. Still trying to decide if i'll stipple the gun.

It was a process:

1. I used brass threaded rod, which I inserted through the hole on the end of the extension cap, and secured with a brass washer and nut on each side of the cap.
2. I re-attached the extension with the spring and follower, and turned the rod out until it would only load five 3" shells, or six 2 3/4" shells.
3. I placed a rubber cap on the end of the rod with the extension to prevent contact wear on the follower, and tightened the nuts on both sides of the cap, as tight as they would go.
4. I removed the cap and filled the interior of it with metal bonding epoxy, securing the interior nut and washer to the cap.
6. I threaded the cap back onto the extension, allowing the epoxy to get into the threads, and wiping the excess off with Goo-Be-Gone.
7. I allowed the cap to dry upright over night, with the cap facing downwards, so the epoxy would pool in the bottom.
8. In the morning, I used a Dremel to cut off the remaining rod, that protruded from the extension cap. I used a plastic washer, between the extension cap and the brass washer, on the outside of the extension cap, as this protected the finish on the extension while I cut off the protruding rod with the Dremel.
9. When the nut and rod were cut flush, I popped the plastic washer off, leaving a clean exterior surface, with one small brass dot in the centre of the cap hole.
10. A small dot of flat black gun paint on the dot, and your done. Looks factory.

At the end, you will be able to remove the extension, but the extension cap will be permanently attached. The only way to remove the plug, would be to cut it out, which would destroy the extension and render it unusable. Of course you have to use a high strength metal bonding epoxy. The spring tube is also protected from contact with the dried epoxy by the spring retention cap inside the tube. You could also use a Nordic +3 tube, instead of the Nordic +5, but I prefer the flushed tube look, and it protects the end of the barrel.

I like the M4 too, but they are not as suited for 3 Gun. A pound heavier, pistol grip is awkward when loading fast, and the ghost ring sites slow down target acquisition.

Yup... those are the reasons I went to the m2 for 3gun.
My m4 worked "okay", but... the pistol grip was a PITA.
The sights.... 'Great for slugs. Ultimate suck for everything else.
The longer barrel of the m2 means a longer sight radius too.
It just points better.

That's very similar to what I did but with different materials and one exception as I avoided getting epoxy in the threads. I used an aluminum tube in place of your rod. In my case the "nut" attaching the extension to the magazine was glued when I got the gun. So the extension comes off c/w "nut" for cleaning. I needed to be more flexible because I shoot in the US for half the year. When in the US I extend the extension with a +1 or + 2 for play in the games down here. Your work is probably a little neater externally but I finished the outside of the cap with a plastic "nut" that looks like it belongs there.

The M4 had a lot of appeal because of the "cool" factor but the M2 is the better gun for the games for sure. I live in Corpus Christi here in Texas which is home to Benny Hill who works most of the competition guns for people I know and shoot with. He modifies both the M2 and the Versa Max essentially the same way. He did my work on a Versa max tactical base opening the loading port, changing the lifter, lightning the bolt and other tuning. The majority of competition shooters use the M2 or The VM with mods. I've haven't seen an M4 used competitively yet particularly because of the pistol grip preventing fast reloads which are 60% of the game.

I think a lot more guys are going to come around to the realization that the ghost ring sights and "tactical" shotguns just aren't as effective for 3Gun as we all know.

I even found that with my turkey gun, just having those mid fiber optics really slowed me down, as, the brain automatically tries to aim, vs. simply pointing and clicking.

I'm infinitely faster with my Versamax now. This same things just came up at my last practice, and that's what a number of folks were realizing.
 
On the VM, some shooters uninstall the centre bead. The only time good shooters "aim" is when using slugs and they rarely amount to many rounds in a match. It's also rare to see any form of optic used. I have a new MRD coming that I may try to get a comparison. I don't have a prayer of ever being competitive so it's all entertainment for me.:shotgun:

autoloaders are kind of pointless in canada for 3 gun, unless you have an extension that you keep in the states for competing down there.
for here you are better off doing a pump action build that holds 10+1. The best you will get for autoloaders is probably the versamax because its chambered for 3.5 which lets you do 7+1 2-3/4".
 
My Versa Max tactical came with an extension that gave me a potential of 8 + 1 or max 6 + 1 in Canada because the tactical is marked for 3 in when in fact it's chambered for 3.5. I rigged it for 6 + 1 when in Canada and 10 + 1 when in the US by taking out the plug I built and adding a + 2 extension cap to the tube. That's pretty consistent with the way they set up guns here in Tx. However the rules where I shoot use 3Gun Nation standards so you can go to the line with a max of 9 +1. You can load to capacity on your first reload or add rounds after the start signal. Depending on the stage, most people shoot and then reload to max later if that makes sense. I'm Uber slow and so just do the best I can without falling down. :runaway: The 3Gun qualifiers I've shot have stages that take 9 shots at the signal. I carry an extra round on the receiver and load that if necessary.
 
Why are they pointless?
Unless you are shooting in "open " division, any rule set I've seen has a max starting load of 9 shells.
You can get 8 or 9 in most 3/3.5" semi's these days.

i.e. 6/7 in the mag, ghost load and chamber = 8 or 9.

Added capacity is nice to have, but isn't necessary.

At the end of the day, main thing separating good from great shotgun shooters is ability to reload quickly.
That and eating enough donuts to manage recoil.

Sadly I was being close to serious. I don't really have too much trouble with falling down but the getting up part is a beach!! If I have to go prone at any point, I'm looking to time out. Mind you, I just turned 70 and am out there every week staying in the game. There's another guy my age but he has been shooting since he was three (Texan) and is still kicking butt. He is my hero:rolleyes: Sometimes we stand together watching and comment that we are older than 6 or 7 of the other shooters put together. Life is good when you have a gun and are oblivious to your shortcomings. :dancingbanana:
