Was wondering why you would sight in 3' high at 100yrs? Is this the same as 200yrd zero? And what is the better rout to go?(for hunting purposes).

3 " high at 100 means that if you hold dead center at 100,200,300 you will still hit a deer size target if you are shooting something like a 308, 303, etc
i don't think you would do this with any of the magnum cartridges though?
 
..I suggest you "Google" a ballistics chart on that .50 cal BMG you hunt grouse with and stop wasting my time. "GOOGLE IT" for crissakes. :p:p:p

uhhh...BC yes? :eek: Ballistic Coefficient, not British Columbia. :D
Velocity = how fast is the projectile moving at muzzle, 100 yds, etc. It will slow down faster as the BC number decreases. All things required to ballistically calculate the path of your projectile. You seriously need to get yourself some reading material, google is your friend.

I'll shorten this up for you.

300wsm w/ most 168/180's @ 3" high at 100m = dead ungulate out to about 350m, if you can do your part.

You'd be better off to shoot at all ranges you expect, as the above method is an extreme compromise.

Done.

3" high wiht a 300WSM, will get it done to 350 yards..hold on the animal, 1/3 to 1/2 way up, and go hunitg...learn the rest later:)
 
Rule of 3; sight 3" high with a cartridge of about 3000 fps, hold point-blank to about 300 yards. Obviously some (slower)will not reach quite as far, and some (faster)reach a little farther but it is a starting place, and 3" is about all most people want to give up on midrange trajectory with a big-game rifle.
 
I've learned to dislike having a high mid range trajectory. When the need for a close range shot occurs, particularly if it is around 70 yards you might shoot under the animal. Sight in for 200 yards and learn the POI at ranges from 5 yards out to 300 yards, or to a quarter mile if you are so inclined.

Hold over at long range tends to be easier than hold under at close. If you aim at air, chances are you'll hit air. Most game is shot at closer rather than longer range.

If you are a long range sniper, tape a drop table to the butt of your rifle, and buy a scope with an easily accessible turret. You have the time to adjust for the long range shot, but you must be prepared for the close range shot that provides a very small window of opportunity.
 
Since most hunting shots are under 100 yards, be very careful when you decide on a high setting at 100 yards, particularly if you are hunting game smaller than moose.
Given a quick opportunity at game, many, if not most hunters tend to shoot high. If your rifle is already sighted high, you just shaved the back hair, and you go hungry.

Now, that's not true of all hunting areas, in this big country of ours, but it's true of most of it.

please explain shooting under an animal at 70 yrds if you are 3 inches high at 100. I don't get this

Exactly!!

The LOWEST the bullet will be below line of sight between the muzzle and the zero range is 1 1/2" or so. That is not enough to miss by shooting low by any means.
 
I also just ran a 180 grain Accubond launched @ 3000 fps.

When zeroed at 250 yards it is 3" high at 100 yards.

More importantly it is also "zeroed" at ~30 yards and is 3 1/2" below line of sight at 300 yards. At 70 yards the bullet is not even below the line of sight but rather 1 1/2" above it.
 
It;s nice to be good at 100 200 300 and 400 and adjust to be zeroed or such

but if you tell me that out to 300 or so I am no more than 3 inches and substantially less at mid range, I am quite happy.

I am 3 inches high at 100 and have never had a problem with animals closer than a hundred. Past 350, aim for the hump :)
