3 in or 3.5 in chamber

Have you handled both versions of the bps . I beleive the 3.5 has a longer receiver which makes the fairly long bps action a little longer .

I have fired one box of 3" steel out of my 3 1/2" chamber and I noticed significant dents in the forcing cone when cleaning it. I decided not to do that again. But...you guys that have shot a lot of 3" or 2.75" steel out of a 3.5....can you let me know what your forcing cones look like. See if I will change my mind. It would be nice to save some money and use 3's.

Several thousand rounds of steel and hd shots, the gun is fine.

Oh my.....wish I could afford several THOUSAND ROUNDS....hunting....

....again several (perhaps tens of..) THOUSAND ROUNDS......goosh....

...the clay pigeon carnage and or duck/goose slaughter....my o my...

This was over the course of about 8 years with 4 of those i was hunting 3-5 days a week. Approximately 2 flats a season. Also shot lots of barn pigeons while lying waiting for honkers to show up.

So rough estimate would bring the total to about 4000 rounds of steel.

Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed.

I found your post quite funny. The Sarcastic bastard was a term of endearment. But hey, thanks for reporting me to "all" the moderators, as you put it. Must of taken some time and effort to report me to "ALL" of them. No better than what you were complaining about.

Recoil.

Take, for example, a "BPS Mossy Oak Shadow Grass Blades" off the browning website. 8.3 lbs with the 3.5" chamber.

The kind of guy shooting this might tend to initially stock up on something like a 3-1/2" Blackcloud load, 1.5oz@1500fps.

That's 656 grains. A muzzle energy of 3277 ft.lbs.

Estimating the recoil of this combo, I'm getting about 48 ft.lbs.

Looking at the "rifle recoil table" on the chuck hawks site, that puts you over the hottest .45-70 or .375H&H loads in recoil, and in the middle of the range of stuff like .416 rem mag, .416 rigby, .458 win mag, etc.

My point is that you would be shooting an elephant gun all day. If you stick to lighter loads, you're stuck using a sub-optimal gun with more weight, a longer receiver, longer distance from shell to forcing cone, etc.

Anyway, I'm considering selling my 3" BPS. It might go on the EE in the next couple of weeks, for cheaper than those new ones you're looking at.

That's a heck of a sale's pitch! Lol

I'm looking for a Mossy Oak BPS. Let me know if you put it on EE. Thanks

Really? Now I'm curious what sort of gun. Shouldn't happen.

There is no bigger lie put there than the guy who can shoot 3.5 "all day". Heck, no one shoots 3 inchers "all day". A fixed breech 3.5 is painful. End of story.
I have a few 3 inch guns, none in 3.5.
Could never see the purpose of the longer chamber, does nothing for my purposes. Especially when nearly all the ammo I shoot are light game loads.

You don't need 3.5" shells for waterfowl... and not for turkey either, although a better case can be made for the benefits on a tom that hangs up. I have never fired a 3.5" shell at waterfowl, but use them on turkeys... but out of dozens of Toms, I think the extra half inch may have only helped on one occasion.

Who couldn't use an extra half inch on that rare occasion?..... :)

Seriously though... when I bought into the 3" craze I was able to see the benefits, the guns didn't cost any more (in fact, steep discounts were being offered on 2 3/4 guns, and the shells had a nominal price difference that was in line with more shot, more plastic and new tooling for manufacturing......

Fast forward to the 3.5 and all we saw was a huge price increase on guns, ridiculously expensive shells and very little gain......

Sound like a marketing scheme in my books....

I see it as same thing as the magnum bolt action rifle craze. Gotta have a magnum when a .308 will cover the majority of it.

Only reason why several of my SG's are chambered in 3" is simply because thats what they're offered in. I can see needing a 3" for certain applications but 3.5" ? It's a pretty small niche.

and if I needed a 3.5" for that very small niche I'd probably get a dedicated 3.5" for that task alone.

2 3/4" will cover the vast majority of the bases.

Sorry for the slow reply. Its a benelli super nova. ...fast moving steel hitting chrome...pretty much shot peening it. I was just wondering the long term effect but not many people spoke up. I would bet this happens to anybody doing the same thing. Maybe its easier to see in chrome and I can only see it when its mirror clean from my tico tool.

you will never make a mistake with a 3.5" chamber. If you run out of shells you can borrow your buddy's shells. I personally never shoot dynamite sticks but you never know when you will need them.
