Well I have to say I didnt' think I would be looking at a folded up creased bull tag on October 23rd but its here and very real. My 5 days in the bush turned into 2 because of a health issue with one of our hunting partners wife. This place was somewhat remote and we all had to pull out at the same time because of transport/logistics. I ended going out on that saturday with no set hunting territory so I had no choice but to become a truck hunter:eek: 10 minutes into this hunt we almost wrecked the truck into a cow who was in no hurry to get anywhere. We stopped on the shoulder and watched it for 5 minutes as it walked to the tree line......

We finally get to some good cuts and there is a fresh layer of snow on the ground, we find no fresh signs throughout the day. Before last light we stop at a nice spot with good height advantage and begin calling, we begin to receive owl like sounds from the bush, we start believing a bull might be responding, we get no grunts or movement but more owl like calls which really start sounding like an owl as we keep listening.....we ran out of daylight and had to put away our rifles and cursed the owl all the way home.

This past weekend we head out to the same cuts which happen to have a tent trailer owned by a friend of mine so we make it a point to be there before first light on saturday morning and split up into 2 groups, the other group sees three moose and begin creeping up and see two cows and a potential calf, the calf ends up being a young cow so the drough continues. I was able to follow some fresh bull tracks in the afternoon but I lost him in some thick cover, no use calling as the rut is over.

We're starting to get regular snow now and I think that will give me some added tracking oppertunities for the rest of the moose hunt, Im also going to organize a river run on the Nat (WMU 30) as its a great feeding area for moose. Im not completely discouraged but time is working against me because I have 1-2 days a week of possible hunting at best. I would welcome any advise for hunting once out of the rut.

thanks

well the drought continues.....We got 10cm of snow today. I didnt' see any tracks anywhere, visibility was quite poor. :(

There will be no hunting tommorow so two weekends until I have to think about preparing the tag for the Christmas Tree.

Well, looks like our group didn't strike out after all. My Father's bull tag was filled on sunday . I dont' have pictures because I couldnt' be there. Im back in with my tag on this final moose hunting weekend to get the dominant bull in the area - Apparently the one they got was scraped up on his sides as he had probably been fighting a bigger guy.

Well, All I need is to put up the tree so I hang the tag. :( We were out all day saturday, I must have covered about 25-30kms on the quad - We seen a few fresh tracks - looks like they were holed up in heavy cover again. We sent in one of the fellows in around 3:30pm and he found more fresh tracks going in circles (thick spruce block) - tried to push them to the other side where we were waiting but I guess he or she was satisfied in buttonhooking and staying put. I guess we will try again next year, I did get a pretty good consolation as I came home to some Moose Filet that night. It was so good we had the same thing last night :D .
