I have a young lad that will be shooting a 30-06 this fall in a deer hunt. I would like to load some 150gr. bullets, to reduce recoil. I was thinking of, Nosler 150BT ballistic tip, 58grs. IMR 4350, with win primers & win. brass. Has anybody tried this load? Any other suggestions?

Not that load, but it sounds pretty stout if you are worrying about recoil. My Garand load is 47.0gr of IMR4064 under a 150gr FMJ bullet. Not chrony'd, but should be somewhere around 2650-2700fps. It would be more than adequate for medium game and has very mild recoil. You can load the 4064 down to around 42-43gr if you want a softer hit and it still works fine and would be enough to put a deer down with no trouble.

I agree, for a young shooter the 150 should not exceed 2700 fps. I loaded some 130 gr bullets for my grandson at 2600 and he did well with them. TTSXs are long and sleek enough to produce good long range performance. A .308/130 gr is more bullet than the deer can handle and my nephew BC has taken both whitetail and mule deer with that load.

Yup, go with IMR 4064 or 4895. You will burn less powder with less recoil than 4350 and get very satisfactory results. I stay with 4064/4895 in the .30-06 until I shoot 180gr bullets where 4350 is useful.:)

Sierra says 4064 is the most accurate propellant in the .30-06 with 150-168gr bullets. My experience bears this out with 4895 a nose behind. You can also try IMR 4320, except in a gas gun. It was developed for .30-06 match loads back in the 1930s and still works well. I find it very good with 168gr match bullets in a bolt gun. You don't hear much about it nowadays.:(

thats what I shoot at coyotes... same bullet, same powder, but I use 57 gr - thats a pretty good wallop for a young hunter... even with a limbsaver...

I've reloaded for 2 30-06's for years- a Garand and a BAR. Started out with 4064 and 165 gr Hornadys. Fooled around a little with H4895, IMR 4895, Varget and R15. Best accuracy is with the 4064. Settled on 46.0 grs in the Garand for targets/plinking and 47.5 in the Browning for hunting.

Thats basically what I load. I use H4350 instead of IMR.

The advice above about loading a little lighter is probably a good idea. My Dad used my 06 last year and his shoulders are shot from pulling wrenches all his life and he didn't my load though. It sure knocks them down!
