Hey Everyone
So Ive been working up loads for the 30-06. Its a Remington 700 SPS. I found a very good load using Varget but when i put them over the chrony they are no where close to the publish velocity. In have been tried 1 other powder i have on hand to try and get more velocity outta them.

With the Varget I was only getting 2750 fps with 165gr Sierra GK. I tried 4007 SSC and got close to 2900 but couldnt get anythiing under a 2" group.
I was thinking of Trying IMR 4831 since i have in here... anyone have any luck with that?

Thanks!
Josh

Thanks! yes I have IMR 4831 on hand for my 6.5x55. will try it as well. Just read that 4895 is better for reduced loads... ?? i have heard of this before in many other calibers for punching paper... would this be the same in the 30-06.. or would these give me full tilt hunting loads?
thanks

If you want more velocity, use the 4831. It is about 100 fps faster than 4895 and Varget.

Load a test batch of 3 rounds each, in 0.5 gr increments of 58 to 60 gr.

Shoot groups with them (cool after each group) and record the velocities as you go. Stop if you find pressure signs or when you hit 2800 fps.

I got the same speed as you did with varget. Switched to 57gr h/imr4350, 165gr bullet and get 2830 fps. Imr 4350 having a little more speed then H. Accuracy is great.

IMR4064. Max loads run around 2900. Varget is only 28 FPS slower. Both 4831's give less than 2800 fps. IMR4350 gives about 33 FPS faster but uses about 10 more grains of powder to get there.
Forget published velocities. Accuracy is what's important and published velocities only apply with the exact components and firearm used in the tests.

The powders in the 4350 area seem to produce the best results with the 165 grain bullets in the 30-06.

I have successfully used: IMR & H4350, H414, W760, Norma 204, Vihtavuori N550 & 160, Reloder 17, 47N, 47sb lot10, etc.

I now have some IMR4451, which is in the same burning rate area, so will try it soon as well.

My all-time pet load has been 60 grains of N204, for 2960, and very nice groups that are always sub-moa in two rifle.

Regards, Dave.

Thanks all for the replies. Looks like im probably going to have to make a phone call and see if the LGS has H 4350 or any of the new stuff you mentioned Eagleye. With Varget at the 2750 FPS im getting 5 shots under 1" but was hoping to achieve that with hight velocity just because i got my Dads 308 running the exact same velocity in a 308 with 42.5 gr of Benchmark.. Might seem kinda pointless but the Chrony dont lie. On an even better note.. Had my new CZ 550 Lux in 6.5x55 out today and am happy to say DAM DOES IT SHOOT!!! IMR 4831 with 120gr bullets is awesome!!! I never did chrony the load for velocity. Thats the next outing. I always has great luck with the 6.5 and 140gr bullets but got these 120gr A-max and they are very very good!!!

Thanks for all the replies.. If the LGS has 4451 ill let u know how it work Eagleye.
Thanks all
Josh

I've had good luck with both IMR 4831 & 4350 with 165 gr Ballistic Tips and 168 gr Bergers

Any X military case is a default IMR 4895 as first powder choice. Helps that i have lots.

Personally i am always more concerned with finding the accuracy sweet spot than squeezing a few extra ft/sec.

What is your purpose here....paper or game...what other projectiles have you used? Some rifles or calibers are really picky about projectile, Coal, and powder. From my experience 30-06 is not usually one of those.

I use H4350 at 59.3 grains with the 165 grain partition which gives me around 1" groups. I recently switched to 180 grain Partitions and worked up with H4831. When I hit 60 grains I got 3 shot groups that were less than 1/2 inch.

A lot of guys report that they get better accuracy with the 180 grain bullet in the 06. The difference in trajectory between the two bullet weights is not enough to worry about.
